MASH was a huge success in the UK. I remember it well growing up in the 70s and 80s but I think they ruined the later series with the canned laughter.

Alan Alda couldn't stand himself. He chased everyone else w/a shot at a punchline away from the show.
If you don't mind saying 'Who's there?" to each pedantic 'knock knock' or laffing histerically as he yuks it up & dry laffs like the laff of the party no matter how stupid it's going to be each time, then he's got a job for you! Look at the way he couldn't help but laff uncontrollably to the dumbest jokes or, it's 'Don't you know how much this place stinks!'
He drove all the rest of that cast & crews a-way. It's me or him & wouldn't it be better if I said the, well, I already have all the punchlines I'm just not going to be happy & miserable to work with. In time: gone were the non-message episodes, the Babe nurses & skirt chasing 1st we get rid of Trapper - never heard from again! Then Frank the but of most jokes as the fool, he destroyed that movie>>TV show on all levels possible & started preaching at the screen 'Don't you know how much this place 'stinks'? Tell us again Hawk! It's like Lucy- eventually Fred & Ethel started to just walk on in! Not sure if this is a fact, but some seemingly reliable sources mentioned to me that the actor who played radar O’Reilly felt that the show really couldn’t go on without his character under scoring the way he did do felt about his importance in the show

I think MASH became worse when the show became dominated by Alda. It was designed to be an ensemble not the Alan Alda Show .

I have a hard time standing the Cartier alan Alda plays. It’s very narsistic,needing attention at all times. The show was called mash not Alan Alda show. He was the domanearing person and I felt it was a shame that they didn’t let us get to know more about the other caritores.

Rewatching all of the series in sequence and it does get progressively harder to stomach Hawkeye's adolescent behaviour and teenage politics. Nobody but Hawkeye realises that "war is bad m'kay ", everyone in authority is a callous idiot, solutions to conflict are self-evident and just require everyone to think like he does and he expects endless tolerance for his disruption of discipline and intensely infuriating behaviour. There is a touch of Holden Caulfield about him.

I got a MASH trivia question to which I'm not sure the answer myself. Which MASH 4077 characters had to receive surgery themselves, at their own hospital. I know Henry, Margaret, Radar and Frank did.

I couldn't stand his character in mash. He was obnoxious, typically superficial and only occasionally warm toward others.

I can still remember the 1972 commercial featuring Alan Alda talking about this new show "M star A star S star H." while scenes from the show played on the screen.
