I'm seeing lots of nationalistic mud-slinging in the Comments from residents of cities with 'sightseeing wheels' of their own which are also not operational. London seems to be especially disliked, although its modest Eye is working as normal. Maybe it's an ex-colonial thing.🤔

Teething troubles are to be expected on all such engineering projects - stiff door handles, steamy windows when it rains, squeaky rubber sealing strips, uncomfortable seat-cushions, whatever - but the only really, REALLY significant thing is this: aside from regular annual maintenance time (which is announced well in advance and so doesn't disappoint visitors), can you book a ride on your city's wheel. Now. Today.

Can you?

If the answer's 'no', your wheel is little better than this vulgar, overblown, ego-driven project. As the operators haven't revealed the exact nature of its difficulties, it seems unlikely that it's just a problem with pesky flies or noisy air-conditioning. More likely it's something fundamental involving contracts and lawyers.

Maybe the initial design was flawed and they haven't worked out who to blame yet.

One thing's certain: Dubai's insanely ambitious leaders have unlimited funds to spend on restoring national pride and an infinite capacity for revenge.

They won't recover from the 'reclaimed land' fiasco (those sinking residential sand islands) for decades, and this wheel is an even more iconic focus for criticism.

I don't suppose the guy (or gal) who specified plain bearings for a desert-based project will be getting much sleep.

It faces the same issue that all Dubai’s mega structures face. SHIT. It’s a 45mins ride and once you get on it.. there is no place to shit if you have to 😂

Dubai is the biggest port of call for our MILITARY. Every month Dubai hosts a MILITARY or government conference. How is it the military can afford to leisure in Dubai at that expense to American taxpayers?

the location seems kinda rubbish. It looks amazing but what are the views? Ocean? City in the distance? Does being that high mean anything past a certain point? The London eye is the perfect size and location for a ferris wheel to provide incredible views of the city.

I'm not interested in entering any structure that is run by people who are unable to use the word 'repair' - especially if they think that using the word 'enhancement' in its place is sure to instill confidence in real human beings.

Let me cut through the bullshit. The engineering was not great and the motion pushed it further into the reclaimed ground than expected. The eye will be moved further up the coast of Jumeirah.

Enhancement Works = "Making it rotate". The beauty of The London Eye is that you get to see London. From the Eiffel Tower you get to see Paris.
From the Ain Dubai you get to see Sand, Sea and some hotels (well you would if it worked).

Let's not forget there is an eternal battle between architecture and engineering. As with Highrise buildings, it's exponentially more difficult the higher you built. This same may have been ignored in this case.

See honestly speaking the theory that its sinking could be partially true considering that all of the reclaimed land on which these mega structures are sitting on reportedly sinking. and that includes the palm, the world islands etc. Bluewaters however being a newer project and with newer infrastructure shouldnt face this issue but it would be safe to not cross out anything.
