Good proper british humour back in the day when people still had a sense of humour and we still had freedom of speech unlike today with the pc brigade playing the racecard whenever they can along with all the snowflakes out there who have nothing better to do than to look for the next thing to complain about.

Love the comments about how satire and anti racist this was, but what you all may have to take into consideration is that the vast majority of folk are not bright and will jump on anything somebody can convince them off.

Judging by a lot of these comments there are a lot of people who can’t tell the difference between tv and reality. It seems that they expect me to believe that if i watch this show then I’ll suddenly believe this is a normal household.

Imagine the woke DEI mind virus types copping a view of this they’d be in their safe place sucking their thumb after only 10 seconds or maybe for the rest of their lives.
If ppl watched it or knew of it back when we had comedy & free speech ! They realise the butt of the joke was always whitey Bill, it’s a bit crude ( a lot ) by today’s standards and a bit cringe now but this is what the U.K. was like generally after hundreds of yrs of seeing only fellow coloured skinned folk the new-ish influx of black & Asians was unsettling for many
Just like if a lots of western white folk started to move into a nation African or Asian nation.
Some ppl get frightened. Most are Apathetic & Tolerant.. which in the long run is their demise if it continues unabated.
My best friend from childhood was black/mixed race & I would defend him always if fellow mates or ppl ever made derogatory names at him , although that was part of been a teenager then, we all made incessantly cruel comments about each other physical appearance or in general constantly to each other. I suppose it was a form of toughing males up especially to life in general , a form of animal rutting as generally combat was man’s original hierarchy that faded over thousands of yrs !

The key question is whether the show aimed to challenge or perpetuate racial stereotypes and I think there are mixed messages. The structure of the show meant that the racist character always lost out to the victim and therefore the show challenged them. The use of a laughter track (which represents a set of shared values) at moments when 'sambo' or 'nig nog' are said indicate racial stereotypes are being perpetuated.

Bill always came across as more educated

Not so funny for the black kid at school when everyone calls him nig nog. This was shown early evening when kids were watching.
