How to draw a straight line - freehand! - Architecture Daily Sketches

Learn before you teach sir. You start out with your hand resting on the paper drawing with your wrist!!! Ugh. when you draw the horizontal line your hand is floating above the paper and the line is much straighter!!!!!

I never expected how straight lines would be graded in architecture school. I'm at my lowest skill right now 'cause my hands are shaky no matter what I do TT.

I like to pull my pencil if possible from L to R and I always look behind the pencil after I start. But I'm a House Painter that used to suck at drawing but now I'm not too bad just cause of Painting straight lines...

I think we have a different understanding of "straight line" definition 😬 but looking at end point definitely helps

I am not an Architect student I am in highschool I just want to know how to draw straight lines so I can make my maths homework look at least half-decent

I’m a design student that comes from an art background of drawing tons of organic shapes–people, animals, trees, landscapes–and I always struggled so hard with the technical drawings because my lines always default to curves. I would use digital art in my big projects so I had the ruler and line thickness tools and could compensate for my shoddy linework with tons of rendering, but during classes where we did architectural pencil drawings I always felt like I was the worst one in the room. I’m doing industrial design in uni next year so hopefully I won’t be suffering like I would in interior or architectural design, but I still definitely need to improve my straight lines if I want to have clean, crisp drawings.

wow ..., so cool! - I am no architect, but MY straight freehand lines are actually a lot cleaner and not wobly at all.

It works! I actually draw very straight lines! I can’t believe what a difference, blows my mind! I used to follow the line and they were horrible:)) amazing 🤩 thanks for the tip and video !!

Thank you so fucking much! I feel so vindicated. This is way better and easier than ghosting lines which a number of art channels seem to insist on. Its much more natural for me do this and my lines are smoother too. I have way to go, but this will help heaps.

Wow, the tip on looking at the target point worked right away. I never drawn a straight line before, but now it became straight as with a ruler. Great tip!. This will go into my daily practise from now.

The fundamental method that is being recommended is a good one, concentrating on the destination point is a good way to learn to draw a straight line, but as others have noted, the direction that you move your pen should be comfortable to you, move the paper or yourself accordingly to align your best stroke with the intended line direction. Pulling down usually works best or across according to your dominant hand. Practice practice practice.......😀
