So I wonder how the 2006 Intel-based Mac Pro compares to this. Has the same case design but it probably a lot quieter and can do more.

So you're saying I don't have to spend $200 at Harvey Norman for a heater, I can just go to the dump and pick up one of those computers for free?

The PowerMac G5 was one hell of a machine.

Another YT creator came to the conclusion that the G5 wasn't worth the effort. Despite being an Apple fan, somehow the engineering failed it. Loud is an understatement. Surely they could have done better. Why was the system getting that hot? Was the PPC Quad core really giving off that much heat? If so, it's a red flag that the processor might burn itself out in less time than other processors. The case looks "pretty". True, but you might just be able to pull the guts, put in an intel Mac Mini. It would be quieter, draw less power, run faster, be more compatible with more modern software - not sure what the drawbacks would be. That's the thing - any Apple fan can draw conclusions from older Apple architecture or newer Apple architecture and come to the conclusion that this isn't worth the time.

The Intel Mac Pro Cheese Grater ended up in the same place, all thanks to the Apple Silicon.

Holy Crap that machine is actually pretty darn powerful!! Even today more than 17 years after this machine was initially released and those spect, despite depercated, could still be more than enough for a day to day laptop (Assuming you are not a video editor, a designer, or some other job that requires abnormaly powerful hardware)

I got one of the originals from 2003. The 1.8 GHZ PCI-X one. Interesting seeing a 20 year old computer with Bluetooth! Very fancy for 2003. When I Bought it I thought it was a first Gen Macpro quite surprised it was older than I thought! Unfortunately I don’t have the monitor or mouse for it yet I don’t even know if it even works tbh

Did you try FreeBSD? They have official support for 32 and 64 bit PowerPC.

I have a G4 laptop that I play around with, it tends to run really hot too. At some point I'm going to open that thing up and upgrade to an SSD, and maybe blow out any dust and refresh the CPU coolant material. I saw your video on opening up this machine though and and that made less of a priority lol.

I wanted one of these back in the day. I had started on Apple computers in the late 80s, and by my teenage years during I slowly started transitioning to x86 machines. By the time this machine was released I was firmly in the windows/linux world and really didn't have an interest other than damn that was a good looking case.. I know at the time of writing this video is showing 6 years, but I just brought one of these 2.0Gz Dual CPU AGP Machines (PCI bus) home yesterday. Yeah I could convert to ATX and what not but honestly I think I'm going to leave it running the G5, it goes well with my 800Mhz Lampshade and my 300Mhz iBook. I look at this one as more of a bridge computer for any kind of media those more ancient machines require.

Have on of these old beasts! Runs PPC Mac games like a champ and after repasting the CPU now doesn't get above 60c using Noctua NT-H1 paste. Might be overkill for my single core mac but only the best for this retro fleet haha!

No doubt the look of the G5 is striking. But in terms of usability a early Mac Pro like a 2006 model would give you the same case design but with way for efficient intel Xeon processors.

you are talking about a computer from 2005 and reporting it during 2016, obviously any Raspberry PI will be faster. you are talking about what was the fastest in 2005. you are evaluating old hardware. obviously an intel pentium spent more energy in 1997 than any current Intel chip nowadays. technology evolves.

Not the machine itself is problematic.
Powerpc couldn't upgrade chip production technology, so Apple decides to use cheap crap and make money selling PCs with its own logo.
ARM technology, used currently by Apple, exists on the market since 80s.
