The Red Alert 2 one happened to me and my brother a lot. While we did have official copies our Dad still thought it was a good idea to copy the game onto burnt discs. When we booted the game from that disc onto a computer for the first time, we'd get that countermeasure even if we booted the game using the official disc. He never understood the concept of piracy... he even tried pirating Wii games at one point.

Fun fact: In the 1989 game "Vette!", if you falsely answer the question from the manual of the game, the game can only be played for a limited time before a pop-up claiming that the player was caught driving a stolen C4 Corvette (At the time) and then the game crashes.

I didn't know the Game Dev Tycoon fails were an Anti-piracy thing. I was so annoyed by failing again and again all the time. I'm not proud of myself for pirating the game btw, I kinda deserved it lol.

I legitimately never knew about the R4's being pirated things for DS, I was given one by my mum of all people, was confused on why shit couldn't work on it and ignored it and just played my legit games that I go through hell to get now. That's what I learnt today, that I need to yell at mum about buying me pirated stuff

The Earth Bound Anti -Piracy measure has to be my favorite, it lets you play through the whole game, with the difficulty increased, then right as you are about to beat it, Boom, it resets and all of your progress is just GONE.

I'm a game developer, and I can say from firsthand experience that anti piracy is waste of time. They'll always be cracked eventually, so the best you can do is make a spooky anti piracy so that people talk about your game

I especially love the Spyro and Arkham asylum ones because they lead you on into thinking you can play the game until for Spyro you try to move to the second world and balloon just dosent fucking work and asylums when you try to use your cape and you just fumble and die
