Philadelphia had a vibrant sunni Muslim community in the 1970s, that was self sufficient with hoagie shops that sold fish, steaks, bean pies, bean soup, the now renowned carrot cake invented by American Muslims, and wholesome food. Back then American Muslim women had to know how to sew to make their own garments and hijab. Sisters were shopping in fabric stores and making the "hook ups" ( beautiful flowing long skirts with matching scarves). Sisters would make new outfits for their children to make sure they had modest dress. This was before the immigrant Muslims increased in number. Sad how all this history had been dismissed and forgotten.
