How To Play Monopoly Correctly! - A Full Tutorial

NOTE: This is a question that has come up a few times, so I just want to ensure it's especially clear: as stated in the video, a player CANNOT build houses on a property unless they own ALL of the properties of that color set. This means that if you own one red property and another player owns the other two, neither of you can build on red properties. You will have to wait until that player goes bankrupt and hopefully acquire their properties, OR you can trade with them (explained in the video).

Friend landed on my property, owes more than he has, instead of declaring bankruptcy and forfeiting all properties to me, he trades them all to player 3 for 0 then declares bankruptcy is that a legal move? the trade was proposed after he landed on my property.

If you own more than one railroad and you land on one of the railroads that you own, can you "take a ride" on your railroad to your other railroad and if you pass go collect $200?

If you cannot pay a rent (not enough cash), can you sell properties to other players BEFORE turning all cards to the landlord?

Hi! thanks for the video! a quick q regarding the mortgaged property and whether when its on the field upside down, and another player lands on can they buy it out? or its the property owner who has to sell it to the new owner and then the new owner can decide what to do with it? lift up the mortgage or keep it? thanks!

There is a rule talking about the only time the bank is allowed to loan a played is on mortgage securities. My guess is that this means when player 1, who has zero cash, bankrupts player 2, that also has zero cash and has mortgaged properties. Player 2 has to give the mortgages properties to player 1. But since player 1 has no cash to pay the 10% mortgage fee to the bank, the bank then pays this loan on mortgage securities…

There are so many strange situations like this that aren’t explained further in the rules.

What happens if you overpaid for rent?

I haven’t played this in years, but I recently bought the Costco version & can’t wait for game night. My family & I never played by the rules but now I do have a question since we would like to learn how to play correctly: What happens if I only own one green & my sister owns the other two green? Does that mean all the greens never get built on & everyone else who lands on them only pays rent for the remainder of the game? Since you can’t purchase houses or hotels if you don’t own the entire color group.

Since our family plays monopoly weekly we’ve had to introduce our own made up house rules to make the games more entertaining. These are obviously unofficial but we feel like it makes our games more fun and competitive. So if you’ve mastered the basic rules of monopoly you could try these out in a game to see if you like them.

Everyone starts the game with these 4 lifelines and can use each of them once a game.

1 Special Role - You can say “Special Role” before you roll then when you roll the dice you have to pick one of the dice to keep and move that number. So if you roll 3 and 4, you can choose to only move 4. And if you roll doubles, like 6, 6 then you can move either 6 or 12. This is best used to attempt to get your last piece to complete a set or used to get the jackpot if you need money or can even be used in the late stage of the game to try to avoid hitting a hotel.

1 Mulligan - You can say “Mulligan” when you don’t want to pay a player because you landed on their property, or because you drew a card that you didn’t want to pay, like the repairs. Best used for a hit that would either make you downgrade your houses or a knockout blow that would end the game for you.

1 Reshuffle - When you draw a card, either from Chance or Community Chest, that you’d rather not have you can reshuffle the card back into the deck and redraw a new card from the shuffled deck. This is best saved for when you really need to reshuffle a card, like getting the Advance to Boardwalk when someone has 3 houses on them or if you own it and want someone else to get the card. Also great to reshuffle the repairs card and you have a whole mess of houses. But be careful that the deck of cards you’re reshuffling isn’t too small, else you may just redraw the same card…

1 Negate - When someone else rolls you can say “Negate” and when they roll and move their piece, whichever spot on the board they land on, it doesn’t affect them and their turn ends. So if they land on jackpot, they don’t get it. If they land on go to jail, they don’t go to jail - they remain in place. If they land on any property that they can buy or a property with houses on them, they cannot buy the property or they don’t have to pay the player they landed on. Best used for when another player is about to lose by someone else’s property and so you can prolong their game in the hopes they land on your property instead.

When I was about about 8 years old, monopoly is our game with my friends.. We played about 6 to 8hrs until only 1 player won this game... Such a good board game monopoly...

When we get a jail card, do we go backwards to the jail or forward?

What do you do if a player is bankrupted by another player and after turning everything over, the bankrupt player still does not have enough money to satisfy the debt, what happens then?

When the 🎲 rolled and a player landed in any property, if it's with the bank then bank either to sell that property to the player who's token on the property or to the other player by auction or bank just collcy the rent from the player who landed on the property??

ive been playing monopoly since i was a kid and playing it wrong. lol none of my friends and parents even knew how to.

I have a question that if a player gets a community chest card or chance card and it says move to a certain location, so if the property is owned do you have to pay the rent or no?

When I played monopoly at school with a group of people I didn’t understand how to play at first but when I watched this video it makes more sense and more clear

Is a player bankrupt if they're short and the only thing they have left to sell is a hotel but there is not 4 houses avaliable

If you draw a chance or community chest card that says you havebto pay money for your houses and hotels and you dont have enough so in order to raise funds you sell some houses and hotels do you still have to pay for them

If you roll doubles to get out of jail do you

Move the double amount and roll again
Or move the double amount but not roll again

And when auctioning is it true that it can only increase in 1 10 or 100 or can it increase in just any number over 1

Question please😭😂 If someone needs money what’s the benefit of the mortgage vs just selling the property, I don’t understand why someone would choose to mortgage if they don’t make money off the property

In trading a property but you have a building on other property on that set do you need to sell the building?

What if the players 1 doesn’t have enough money and owe player 2 and players 1 give his properties. What if the player 2 doesn’t want to pay the unmortgage neither the 10%? Does player 2 have a choice or he need to pay for it?

Thank the lord I found a video like yours. I felt so humbled to have you explain the entire game, as you're correct, most of my life we "winged" some of the rules not actually knowing the full detail of how to play.
My son is soon turning eight and has been getting me to play Monopoly everyday for a good two hours! I am more than ecstatic to play our next time and hopefully implement the proper rules for him so he's able to teach friends and family!!

Lol we make an added rule whoever is responsible as being the bank if they steal money and they get caugh they pay a $500 fine and go to jail they pretty much get fired and someone else becomes the bank.
