As we make our way into Dondoran, a chilling narrative takes shape—a powerful, magic-wielding thief swept through the castle, the King’s guards no match for his awesome might, and he made off with the cherished Earth Orb. Even now, he lurks in the nearby woods, casting a caliginous cloud of doom and intimidation upon the town; the townsfolk fear for their safety, their belongings, and the future of their pottery-based economy…

Luckily, a small child with a wooden stick shows up to solve the problem.

A few of the game’s odd design elements come to the forefront here—there is no currency and there are no shops, so it is not possible to buy healing items when you run out. There exist characters who will give you items—but only if you have none in your inventory, and they only give you one, so you can’t stock up. Additionally, grinding is far less productive than most RPGs, because each level gives you only one, single HP or MP, rather than a percentage, so each subsequent level represents a smaller gain than the one before.

After defeating the thief, I obtain a healing spell, which helps with the item situation and will quickly become my most used spell by at least two orders of magnitude.

I then accidentally sail to a new area by getting magnetized to an automatic door.
