Dark thought creates dark work. If Lovecraft had been a well-rounded, gregarious xenophile, we may not have a literary canon that has terrified and inspired for a hundred years. His subject matter is the foundation of his greatness, but it's more than that. It's the man himself, really; he allowed his audience into a mind wrought with anxieties and irrational fears that shaped the work.
