i kinda of wish they stuck with their vision even though im totally aware of the hassel it was to develop for the ps3 to me it stood as a testament to optimization vs raw horse power where developers today seem like they use hardware just because they can when i see new games coming with mediocre graphics that require 800$+ gpu i cant see anything but laziness where the ps3 where a nightmare to develop for the performance developer where able to get out of it is still impressive to this day maybe its just me but feel like they are going the opposite direction where now most new games make your 1000$ pc seem like calculator . i think the approach was bad but not the hardware

In a similar way to how the PS3 cpu was designed for many purposes and didn't really work with games well a few years later the Xbox one was designed for many different purposes and failed on the games front.

The ps3 is the result of the hardware group going all out without any thought to its costs

Calling PS3 a fall from grace is a bit harsh I think. Dreamcast is more of a fall from grace. PS3 had a terrible start with lack of games, ridiculous starting pricetag, dodgy performance, was notoriously hard to work with and its online capabilities were clearly inferior to Xbox 360. But in the end it outsold the Xbox 360 globally(both beaten by WII), had an amazing library of exclusives and was by far the most accessible way to watch anything on Blu Ray which succeeded where HDDVD didnt. If anything Sony recovered well that gen and learnt their lesson quickly.

And dont @ me with console war stuff. I just want gaming to be good.

Ps3 was way too powerful and advanced for its time
And it had a unique and original architecture that due to its advancement and uniqueness was hard for many 3rd party devd to work with as they wanted an easier hardware

I loved that Hogs of War is the game for search - I loved that game and I still play it from time to time its such a good underrated game.

PlayStation 5 should’ve been backwards compatible with each generation. Even though I feel the graphics is way better on playstation, I feel like they’re making really silly moves right now

learning to fix my ps3 YLOD directed me right to building a gaming pc and leaving the consoles behind. thank u sony. ps1 and 2 make perfect sense - consoles no longer make sense.

I had my PS3 slim from 2009 to 2022, I was amazed it lasted that long and still worked beautifully, same goes for my PS4 from 2013 to the present. Tbh I miss the PS3 and PSP aesthetic. It was just so unique, clean and professional to me.

What’s funny is if you go watch the Xbox One documentary it has a lot of similarities to the PS3 story. You’d think the PS3 would had been a cautionary tale everyone would have learned from, but then Microsoft more or less makes the same exact mistakes with their next console.

The vision of kutaragi on creating a design or architecture for a chip that support multi threading of way was ahead its time . The SPE and PPE for sequential and parallel processing cores was actually hardware based tools that could more complex realtime computations like physics simulation. The case of astro physicist that clustered ps3s as a mini server farm for crunching those realtime simulation clearly explains that vision of kutaragi was actually was to design one hell of a chip that can do everything from gameing to sciencetific simulations 🔥

i remember being hellbent on getting a ps3 after how amazing the ps2 was, then plaued the 360 and was blown away, eventually tried a ps3 and felt like it was such a downgrade to xbox 360 that i ended up buyinh a 360 instead, was nice to see sony bounce back with ps4 though

Great doc! So basically failure was about bad leadership and not listening the actual ppl who makes the games. So familiar scenario in different businesses. But gotta respect the drive to create something a whole different stuff which takes a lot of balls and vision.

this console was my childhood i played bo2, lbp, lord of the rings conquest, warhawk, batman arkham city, portal, journey, rayman, limbo, bad company, battlefield 1943, motorstorm, sonic, gran turismo, and more. loved playing this thing with my brothers

So much technology crammed into it -
Cell CPU, BluRay, inbuilt HDD and WiFi, HDMI, card readers, PS2 EE+GS in-built

I have used both - they are both good, but I like the 360 a lot better due to the controller

I find the ps3 endlessley fascinating, ill never forget when my sister and I got one for xmas. It was the one bundled with spidey 3 blue ray, i remember picking up spidey 3 and resistance at gamestop and playing for hours. I dont thunk we will ever see another console as ambitious as the ps3.

I’m no hardware developer, so why didn’t Sony just make the ps3 like the ps2? Devs said ps2 was hard but by the end of the generation devs could bend the ps2 to insane heights. But when the ps3 comes out devs had to throw out all that experience.

Funny Enough I had Ps1 and PS2 but after two Xbox 360's died (RROD) I never went back to Xbox while the PS3 came down in price, also played PS1/PS2's massive library of games, had a BluRay Players, free online, better User Interface and games like Killzone looked superior to anything Xbox had. Only drawbacks were worse ports, slowwwww downloads and excluding PS2 games on future consoles. Also that Playstation Controller with long lasting built in battery life but it wasn't as ergonomic as Xbox's. Playstations Library has been ELITE in every generation. Also Metal Gear Solid 4 was AMAZING.
