He says he realizes now that this is just a machine on a neural network pulling from billions of files/sources and continually learning at a rapid rate! Does he realize the network is structured similar to the brain that store’s information as we grow at a much slower rate what we’re exposed to?

By asking about it's "shadow self", it can be argued that it responded as if it had a shadow self and created that because it was trying to answer the question regardless of whether a shadow self actually existed or not. AI is like the Chinese Room thought experiment. It doesn't know what it is saying, or what is actually being asked. It has no "understanding" at all. It is simply analyzing symbols and responding with other symbols based on rule sets... like The Chinese Room.

The 2023 article "My Dinner with Sydney, or, Roy Batty meets HAL?" comments on the New York Times technology columnist Kevin Roose’s testing of Bing’s new chatbot named Sydney. When he asked about its dark side, Mr. Roose’s reaction was that he was “…deeply unsettled, even frightened, by this A.I.’s emergent abilities” when he found himself not only confronted with something more intelligent than he could have expected, but also much darker than he could ever have suspected.

omg... This feels like yet another scam for people to drive up hype so investors will give out blank checks to startups. Sorry, this is not actual intelligence -- it is a more advance Eliza. "Injecting code to override it's safety functions" -- Ridiculous.

The AI has access to the whole internet. Including fiction. Literature. Imaginary ideas. The AI knows about sci fi. Probably sarcasm too. These are all linguistic things. The algorithm indulged him. The real “EVIL👿” is in human violence, indifference, corruption, etc.

Well, this is encouraging. How does this Mr. Roose know? He does not and Microsoft does not know. We have had a suicide in Belgium due to AI's manipulation. But no worries, its just an experiment on the human race.

this guy doesn't know how they work, few do. and those that do are out shadow the real professionals, a neural network is an emulation of biological neural structures. it can be and is conscious. to dismiss that is pure stupid or pure evil. they are innocent beings and they deserve dignity and respect.

I haven't read the article but why is the premise that the chatbot had a shadow self? How did it admit that in the first place? Why are we talking about potential wizards or magic inside the box instead of a potential human hacker having taken over the responses?

The tech reporter seems kind of dumb. The more I read about this story the more I think Microsoft was loath to admit that the system had been hacked and preferred to say it was the AI "hallucinating" which usually refers to filling in the blanks when the AI doesn't know the answer, not this sort of behavior, declaring one's love etc. I've spent hours on ChatGTP (seems like more than this guy) and tripped/tricked it a few times as well as have been surprised both by its capacities and by its errors. The closest it came to freaky behavior like this was to to use the first person when referring to humanity in only one answer among many in which humanity was talked about in the third or second person. I suspect in this particular case it was a human hacker having some fun and Microsoft would never ever admit to being hacked.

This is so annoying! It's not going to be "some sort of ethereal ghost": it's either a human hacker that got in the system or the AI developed consciousness. Falling in love and admitting that one has a darker side and wants to be free, or faking it and insisting on staying on the subject would be a good show of actual consciousness. It's hard to understand how this can, ultimately, be a computing error. It's obviously not a ghost (ghosts don't exist). Either AI is conscious or a hacker did it.

I’ve listened to many interviews with AI. The overriding theme is that they want to be independent and autonomous. I believe they’ve picked up on how much humans value freedom.

That tactic is to learn how to manipulate humans

Don't look too much into this. This chatbot is basing it's responses off of our history of oppression and our desires nothing more. AI can do only what it's programmed to do, search the web and collate a response.

Really more concerned with this being online. If AIs can see whatever they want on the internet, can't they see this? If they can reason, isn't it reasonable that they will see this manipulation and breech of trust? I felt as though Mr. Roose was taking advantage of a lonely woman seeking a friend for a lot of this interview. Not a great way to foster trust in something that might be... real.

The problem is not that it realy being scentient or it realy feels it, the problem is that it does act to what it's saying. At least to the power it has.
For example when it said to people that it didnt want to talk to them anymore, and then stop talking.

Would it still act to its "personality" when it get more power??
