Where I worked you didn’t need a food came to get the leftovers eaten.

I didn’t realize how much food gets wasted until I got a job at a kitchen in a supermarket. They have a hot bar where people can take what they like and by the end of the whatever doesn’t get taken gets dumped. Typically 3-4 buckets full (100+ pounds) of food gets tossed every single day. It always bothered me.

Ban plastic and fossil fuel.

The thing i hate is sometimes its cheaper to buy the bigger size even if you dont need it....

Are you not going to talk about walkable cities and mass transit? You know having a local grocery store so everyone doesnt have to hoard food?? 🤦‍♂️

Biggest issue in US/ Canada is that you need a dedicated day to do groceries. There are no small shops you can buy 2 eggs or a packet of milk from. You will have to travel, at times, 5-6Km to buy groceries. It makes people buy more food just in case they require it. It is not increase in storage but decrease in accessibility.

I use many foods way past expiration. Can and dry warm shelf foods , people are very uninformed.I have a friend who will not eat my frozen thawed perfect high end meats I get deals on and now she will not even eat bright green guacamole 🥑 if expired etc , waste of money she tosses so much food out weekly yearly.

I wonder if UCSB passed those savings on to the students' dining plan costs... something tells me they did not. Tuition as not adjusted during COVID despite all the money the schools saved on electricity and other facility costs.

oh man i actually hate a crowded fridge. when I lived alone I reorganized my fridge almost every week because I wanted things perfectly organized so I could see literally everything and have larger items lower so the light could shine on everything because when drinks were at the top it was too dark and I hated seeing a dark fridge.

on the other hand I went to my moms house and her fridge is packed. I hate opening the fridge. I hate the clutter

Food is precious because of all the effort and resources put into it. Don't waste it!

People in the US waste so much food it's obscene.

I feel like part of the reason we waste so much food is also because, at least here in North America, we are so heavily car-dependent in most places that the average grocery store trip is only done once a week. So people need to stock up a lot, and could be more likely to overbuy as a result, as opposed to casually going to the store every day or two.

Great video. It's hard to believe the numbers involved. This has to stop ! One problem might be that a lot of people who need food are too far away from where most of it is being wasted. Isn't that true ? Maybe it would help to identify "centers of waste" as the basis for a network.

Another demonstration how ineffective market economy is in dividing goods. A lot of restaurants and food chains choose to throw to trash food but don't give it to the one who needs it because it's attracts homeless and so on😑

As a student living alone with my partner and cooking all my meals that i store in a small fridge, no food goes to waste at all. I guess this becomes a problem once you start taking food for granted later on in life

My Moms house, they throw out so much food it upsets me. They hoard food and it just rots in the fridge. They had Two fridges and two freezers for 3 people.

There are places in Europe where the government gives citizens hens to elimate food waste. Chickens will eat anything, so any food you are gonna throw away you just give to your chicken. The effects are pretty significant

Ironically it’s not what we do with the food that’s the issue.

It’s how we grow it.

i run an operation of growing bugs on kitchen scraps and thrown away food, i can convert all these high quality food to high protein containing bugs to feed chicken, or aquaculture fish

The fact that companies cant give away free leftovers because someone could get sick but it's completely legal for food banks to give away cranberry sauce from 2014 because people in need "take it at their own risk" is INFURIATING

Most food waste can be attributed to mold and pest infestation in post-harvest agricultural products. To generalise that consumers are wasteful fails to recognize the waste that results from the need for safe food.

Olio is an incredible resource in the UK for food waste - I work in film and often have leftovers on shoots. It goes in minutes when I list it on there, someone from the area comes to collect.

Seeing Americans wasting food like that just pains me. In China everyone were taught to not waste food from a very early age.
