If I buy a hammer, I'm not planning on driving screws with it... Match the tool to the purpose.

I would start comparing a selection of different grain and bullet types. I myself dont realy aprecciate the Federal Munition ballistics whise and would rather go for Hornady, RWS or even Barnes. You will get even better results with each weapon. If you are realy an enthusiastic hunter you are very careful with deciding on munitions

Guns are guns and people are people. Mix them and you have utter chaos. And opinions are like butt plugs, everyone has one. Then we move to fiction and truth. And lies and deceit. All of these apply to guns. As I listen to these guys, I hear all of the mentioned. A 300-win mag is overpowered for anything but the biggest of bears and Africa. Anyone I see shooting at an animal past 300 yards will hear my wrath and fury. Ethics is not just a word. I saw #2 grown men cry like little girls. They gut shot a deer, and it was balling so loud it hurt your ears, till I ran up and head shot it. Neither man could shoot it and put it out of it's misery. Neither man hunts anymore. I've never met a man in my life that thinks he's not an Army sniper. Never met one that isn't all swelled up with himself. This is known fact among hunters and shooters. But when the pressure is on, and nerves are tingling. All that goes out the window and reality raise its ugly head. And they miss and miss but keep shooting hoping and praying for a hit. With no regard for anything, or any other hunter or house or cow or child. They just want a lucky shot. And damn the Deer or moose, no concern whatsoever. Ethics, what's that? I think promoting anything past 300 yards is wrong. I think promoting rifles that shoot out to a thousand yards is bad. If a man wants a 300 Weatherby magnum to shoot deer with, more power to him. He'll regret it when he gets older and his elbow and arm rotator start killing him...!!! Or a 300-win mag or a 375 H@H go for it. Even though all anyone needs is a Thurdy-Thurdy. or a 243. I own a lot of guns and shoot a lot of guns. I've killed more deer than anyone I've ever met or know of. But ethically ...!!!

a 6.5 cr., a 7mm-08, a 7 mm,rem mG.
Ok you get the picture 😅

Way too many variables for a specific platform. It depends on the terrain , distance and task at hand. If you have to ask for one I’ll go with the 300 PRC. The downside to that is lack of factory automation readily available. Although if you hand load you are good to go.

I own rifles in 308, and 300 win mag. But also have a Remington model four cambered in 30-06 which dropped a 800 lbs. Maine moose at 200 yards . I’ll stick with my 30-06. But, this show was entertaining, keep up the good work.

Yeah NO. I have .308, 30-06, and 300 win mag. Comparing 308 to 300 win mag is like comparing a middle weight fighter to a heavy weight fighter except the heavy weight is faster in this case. It hits harder further and faster. So I'm going to have to ca BS on this one!

To be fair, you need to establish a ratio of felt recoil vs drop/drift and felt recoil vs penetrating.

When you size that up, I think you choose 308 nearly every time.

300 wm should get two points for drop and drift as the 308 isn't even in the same ball park. In fact it's in a hole(pun intended and spelled wrong) different city. Just might as well have rainbow panties lol

As a handloaded your availability and versatility are both moot points because I can load the same projectiles in both. Don’t recommend a 110grain 300wmg for most things but it’s a screamer. Also wouldn’t recommend anything above 165 in a 308 due to neck length and powder reservoir but you can put a 220+ in either.

These 300 win mag rounds are watered down because those 180 gr rounds should be moving at 3300 fps plus vs 190 gr at 3150 fps from a 26" barrel.

Range of the shot is the important decider. Cannot compare over 500 yards. If a real comparison do it at 100, 200, 300 yards, even possibly 400 yards. Yes 308 will shoot out to 500 plus but at the longer ranges there are deficits. Comparing these 2 at the current ranges is ling comparing 30-30 to 308 at 300 yards.

Basically long range 400 yards Plus 300 winmag, under 400 yards 308, 150 yards and under 30-30.

Rough summary of caliber usage:
30-30: bush gun, 50-150 Yards
308: bush gun to medium range 50-350 Yards
300winmag: Medium to longer range. 200-500+ yards
Yes all can shoot longer ranges but at what cost to terminal velocity? All depends what you are shooting/hunting !

I would like to say 300 win mag is using 180 grain, and 308 is using the 150 grain. 308 going to fly faster per feet per second, if not the same with less stoping power of energy on target, compared to the 300 win mag.

When the 30-06 was created and used in ww1. They used 180 grain, because it was a close balence between energy and feet per second.
