J’ai adoré travailler sur les chenilles marines pendant de nombreuses années, ma préoccupation était le moteur électronique où j’avais plus de problèmes à cause de... Électronique !

They are hard to start, but once they get that first off they will run all day with no issue and can be shut down and restarted over and over

These engines were absolute garbage in a locomotive application. Gutless, ornery, high maintenance shop queens. Guaranteed two weeks or more in the repair track after being beat on. Every one I ever ran was disappointing. Worn out EMD could run circles around one of these. If it was a leased unit, our motto was "burn it down and send it back" 🤣

In childhood I always thought that caterpillar products use electric motors that powered by something like fuel pills I don't know why?

3208. Best starting engine in our fleet. On the coldest of days that thing pops right off.

I made a career out of working on EMD Locomotives, and when Cat bought EMD, our quality went to hell

I am not familiar with the quality of cat engines, but if you look at the first two engines, it seems tha CAT makes very high quality starters :)

I guess Cats are the diesel equivalent to the McCullough chain saw? Can't start 'em, but once they go its fine? Ever see a chainsaw murderer use a McCullough? Nope.

When you start them cold and you listen to them for a while as they warm up you can hear them tighten up. At the end of the day you let them idol for 15 minutes before you shut them off and you can hear the sound of the motor change. You can get very attached to a caterpillar.
It goes way past customer loyalty.

those newer engines are so much cleaner on start up.some of the old ones, you need a gas mask by the time their firing on all the cylinders.

As an h/d truck tech in the late 70's early 80's, the 1693's, 3406's & 3408's were the gold standard for truck engines, commanded respect and admiration from drivers and techs alike. If there was any way you could afford one you got one. The high pitched "snap" of them firing was music to our ears
