As a provisional agreement reached between the Philippines and China seemed to unravel almost as soon as it was announced, Manila says it will continue to assert sovereignty over Second Thomas Shoal in the part of the South China Sea within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone -- what Manila refers to as the West Philippine Sea. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in his State of the Nation address said, "The West Philippine Sea is not just based on our imagination. It is ours. And it will remain ours, as long as the spirit of our beloved country the Philippines burns... We will strengthen and raise the awareness and knowledge of the entire country, and we will ensure that we can pass it on to our youth and our next generations ."
