England footballer Fran Kirby says the new pre-loved sports kit marketplace 'kitround.com', the UK's first re-commerce sports site, will be a big boost to girl's football in the UK.
The 'Do Good and Declutter' campaign, supported by Visa, has seen thousands of disguarded items of kit being loaded into 'kitbins' in David Lloyd Centres up and down Britain, and then sold at kitround.com.
Visa and kitround are allocating 100% of the list price of all ‘Declutter & Do Good’ donated items sold on kitround.com during May – July 2024 to three highlighted charities, including 'Football Beyond Borders', a charity that empowers girls through playing football.
"I feel growing up, you have a sense of kind of this imposter syndrome because you don't have a kit that suits your type of body" said Kirby, "And it's a really weird thing to describe because it's just a football kit. That's all it is. But it's so powerful to you to have it."
Kirby, along with other Team Visa athletes, has donated her own kit to the cause.
The other two charities receiving funds are 'the Youth Sport Trust' and 'the London Irish Foundation'.
Debra Nelson is a mentor at ''Football Beyond Borders', and sees the challenges first hand faced by girls from deprived areas trying to play football.
"Working with these teenage girts, the lack of kit is such a big barrier to access the sport. Travel is a big one, and finding a team is a big one."
According to one statistics outlet, 820,000 girls now play football in the UK, that's an increase of over 150,000 from 2018.
The other bi-product of the initiative is that the kit will be saved from an early grave.
"the worst case scenario for any of this is that it ends up in landfill" said Carter. "And when you look at some of the items that are in landfill, they're taking literally a thousand years to decompose."
Visa have injected funds into the campaign as part of its ongoing mission to support inclusive, sustainable, and impactful projects in sport.
"You're removing the barriers in terms of young girls, being able to participate in sport. So it's like a full circle in a way of it's good for business, it's good for the environment and actually people and individuals. So it's like a no brainer." said Agata Laight, Visa's Inclusive, Impact & Sustainability director.
