The Soviet scientists made them based on Artyom's diary. They were meant to be weapons unleashed on the enemy. But they were pacifist in nature. They were locked in the bunker of D6. ( Those are weld shut and locked from the inside). At last part, the little Dark ones free them and depending on your karma, will help or not help you at the ending.

I like to think they were aliens hiding out on the planet and when the place was nuked they were free to walk around more.

Nice work, with one minor exception. The trope of humans destroying everything they don't understand, however popular, is pretty retarded. If that were the case, we wouldn't be curious about anything. Normally, if we're afraid of something, we keep our distance. Then we explore it. If it is judged to be harmful, which it often is, we only destroy it then. Even in that case, though, because humans have a tendency to displace empathy, there will be a bunch of idiots who feel bad about destroying an invasive plant species or an inanimate object like a hill. I guarantee you, in a post-apocalyptic scenario, there would be dumbasses who wanted to protect Demons or Deathclaws or whatever else, because there always have been throughout history. That doesn't sound at all like a species which just exterminates anything it doesn't understand at all, does it?

Maybe they are humans from the future that came back to the past to stop the nuclear apocalypse. They tried to stop peacefully but they failed and then they remained stuck in the past for some reason. And the people will start telling stories, wondering about theyr origins.

the dark ones are 3rd worlders. the child one from last light is a kid from india. thats odd in that your in russia and never meet a single minority so why does the dark one speak like a kid from india who was raised in america mostly?... because that is what he is. india has a caste system and interestingly enough a spectrum of skin tones . there are people about as dark as the darkest africans in india. the russians wouldnt let them in the tunnels due to curry furry fears

I tend to think they were either a psychic weapon or an experimental strain of humanity made to withstand high-radiation environments (in which case the psychic powers may be accidental).

I tend to think the lack of visible external reproductive organs is probably due to them being sheathed or otherwise protected within the body when not in use, which makes sense for a creature that seems to be all about environmental hazard resistance.

The Homo Novus could also just, you know, reproduce Asexually, through just making a copy of themselves, which is why there are baby dark ones. They could also possibly give birth or reproduce orally through some means. IT is possible for them also to be all female, and be able to use a method of self reproduction by having both the sperm and egg inside of them, and able to develop children, thus why they do not have genitalia.

Wouldn't it have been fascinating if we could have evolved with other homo species, not attacked them to extinction. We could have had such a variety of people but nah, even our nature is selfish.

I don't think the existence of the Dark Ones in the D6 in the game means that these are pre-war dark ones created by the soviet scientists. Like you said, most of the dark ones' traits could be a result of radioactive mutation excluding their telepathic ability which was created by the bio-engineering soviet scientists.
In game Artyom says that the Dark Ones' cities that was nuked was their main city and it isn't impossible for there to be other cities. But the room in D6 could possibly be their creation area by the scientists which they still call home and also one of their breeding grounds after all why let a good shelter go to waste. However I think these dark ones were a splinter group that escaped from the main city due to a disagreement with others to stand their ground as one of them tries to manipulate and kill Artyom to stop the nuking or believing in Arytom to be wise enough to stop the nuking. So they did an exodus and took shelter at D6. After the nuking, since they are all telepathically connected, they couldn't bear the pain of the horrifying mess their telepathic network was in and decided to hibernate to escape the pain. Only problem was they didn't know when to wake up.

Idk if you noticed but when we nuke them and the cutscene shows there’s multiple baby’s so yea your right about reproduction with them so the baby dark one is just born and ran away from the nukes and others did not as we know of but they are a really cool idea and I think it’s what us as humans want something to have the abilities to survive a irradiated area and also having the ability of telepathic hurting or speaking or just other things on top of that is what us as a human is and teleportation would be something that is as humans would want and need for a nuclear destroyed area

I don't think we will lose the pinky since children born with only for fingers would struggle to interact with tech that was designed for five and would be seen as disfigured and therefore would likely reproduce less often ie be less successful then the humans with five

The dark ones were most likely government made, because at the end of last light, in D6 there's a room filled with them that you let free, allowing for the good ending. So either they found shelter or that's where they originated and a few escaped and formed a new group

I can’t say much about the game or it’s plot as I lack the means to play it without blowing up my laptop. That said, I will use historical elements to fill the gaps. We know that around that time when the nuclear arms race was ramping up and MAD was well on its way to a horrible reality, we also had the space race to the moon. These creatures are extremely resistant to almost all known space born hazards from the look of it and even appear radiotrophic in nature. They make me think either perfect astronaut or alien. Maybe even an attempt to leave such a MAD world behind all together before the big explosion
