The two parties didn't switch.

The right has always been for personal freedom and the left has always been for government power. The "switch" happened when personal freedom was met and the left started arguing for "extra rights" for specific groups of people.

I think Steel Ball Run takes place in 1890, which is 25 years after it was illegal to own slaves. But it still is weird since there was segregation at that time so it would have been impossible for him to be the president’s personal bodyguard but idk.

It might just be me, but I think Valentine would also be a modern day Republican as well if he was sent here, but that's just me

I'd rather choose Funny Valentine as a president over the goofy modern presidents, he had a noble cause but he was rotten in his core

Something that I think is also makes Funny Valentine an interesting (and excellent) villain is that, even within the American isolationism ideal he has, it's still from a bigoted perspective because he has no problem with even a few American lives lost just so that he can obtain the Holy Corpse. The cross-country race in of itself was recognized as dangerous and life-threatening, and the lives of the Steeles and his subordinates doesn't phase him either (even back before he could accuse Lucy Steele's actions as treason).
In a lot of ways, Funny Valentine kinda reminds me of Pucci but with his ideals and goals being a little more complex.

You could also use the point that his wife is lgbt. Similar with the fact that he had a black man as a bodyguard him having a wife who is not straight would most likely point to the direction that he was a left leaning politician. (this is obviously under the assumption that he knows his wife isn’t straight and I haven’t read steel ball run. So correct me if I’m wrong.)

Ok nice video but also the party flip is a very big misconception. Both parties still hold the same core values they always have. I still agree with your decision

The Democrats and Republicans didnt really switch. Up until Abraham L. there wasn't really a republican party. So once Abraham became the first republican president, people realized there really was another way to operate the country. So people who originally thought democrats were the only option, found a new alignment. Aside from slavery and a few more questionable things, the democrats were a lot better than they are today. So its kind of valid to say they swapped to republicans in a sense? But really, true democrats stayed the same, while others switched once they realized republican was a real option.

I think it’s actually very symbolic if he were a Left leaning politician. As an anarchist (essentially an extreme leftist.), while he doesn’t really swing in the same courts as I or my colleagues. He is definitely more like a center-left, or authoritarian-left type of guy. You could argue he would be a proponent of state communism by the way D4C functions. He literally redistributes fortune to those who he favors. (Usually himself.) He’s also not against the idea of sending assassins to hunt Johnny and Gyro. Which would make him more authoritarian. Isolationism also tends to run in more communist circles than socialist or anarchist. All in all, I think this is a good theory.

If I had to offer a second choice however, I’d say perhaps he was a third party. There have been many times a third party either nearly won, or did but some fuckery happens in US history. The Whig Party (yes that was the name.) was one that ran around the same time as the early democrat republicans. Federalists were also third party at one point. The most notable would be The Progressive Party which was founded by Theodore Roosevelt. Which was incredibly successful and nearly won presidency.

Considering that ge replaces Harrison in the timeline that means he would have defeated Cleveland which means he would've been a Republican also you completely got the parties completely wrong the Republicans weren't left wing they were always right wing however they weren't dominated by conservativism, while the democrats started as the left wing party of the working class to combat the elitist Democrat-Republicans of the northeast. The Republicans started off as a anti slavery party but after reconstruction the party wanted to move on as quickly as possible from the civil war era and black issues to get back to running the country

You've been misinformed by the "the parties flipped" myth.

The Democratic Party knew that their segregationist policies were dying in popularity, so they decided to try and leapfrog the Republican Party by pushing for more enticing policies. The hardcore racists like Lyndon B Johnson or even Joe Biden themselves never had a change of heart. They're still the party of slavery, where they sing the same racist tune but instead advertise it with a different angle. The Democrat-run cities like Baltimore have residents that are practically "enslaved" to vote Democrat each and every election cycle now that they've become completely dependent on the welfare system.

I'm not mad at you for misstating that a historical Republican is the same as a modern Democrat, because I understand you don't reside in the US. I just find this topic sad because the Democratic Party is still the party of racism, fear, hatred, and division, yet they've simply employed Orwellian methods and scripts to use as tactics to spin their racism into something that sounds appealing while wrongly discrediting their opposition as something they're not.
