We already have touch screens with gps/music in our pockets, this screen just takes up space. Its also easier to replace a switch than a screen.

I truly believe that our excessive use of touchscreens are causing a mental health issue... the lack of tactile feedback is separating us from reality, humans especially those that are excessively favourable fo physical feedback go crazy when we have nothin to interact with (at least feel like we don't) we are essentially touching on a piece of glass and something crazy happens, BUT I DON'T THINK THIS IS GOOD AT ALL

I rented a new car that had a touch screen for all the functions. I hated it. Just to try to turn on the fan was so counterintuitive and complicated. I hated it.

Texting on a smartphone while driving is forbidden, as it is very dangerous. Finding a song, adjusting equalizer settings, sifting through phone contacts on your entertainment system for minutes, while staring at the screen, rather than the road is no problem... Go figure. 😂

A few programmable knobs with small screens on them to indicate what are they programmed now, could solve this disgusting thing. And yes, lets make one giant touch screen so we would go broke to fix it.

Take a look at airliner screens. Yes, they have them, but none are touch screen. Pilots need knobs and buttons. Case closed.

Anyone who’s driven a car with an all-touch interface should be able to tell it’s not as a safe as analog controls. It is undeniably more difficult (or often impossible) to use without taking your eyes off the road. I, unfortunately, think some regulation around requiring certain features to have analog controls may be the only way to mitigate this issue, especially with the incentives that touchscreens provide to manufacturers, as they mention in the video. I have no issue with touchscreens themselves, but they are just not good when driving a car.

It’s the same reason we still use mechanical keyboards and mice—we’re not looking at the input controls while using them. And that’s only for when we’re sitting at a desk, not driving massive hunks of metal at high speeds! It’s one of the few times I can recall really advocating for moving our tech “backwards,” but progress is not always good for its own sake.

It’s in car manufacturers best interest to make cars as distracting as possible. If you lose go I’d and write the car off, your insurance buys you a new one and the manufacturer makes another sale. And believe me, they know this

I'm amazed at how much useless information I have in front of me in the gauge cluster. The best speedometer I've used is the size of a postage stamp. I could easily see using steering wheel controls with a screen in the gauge cluster.

Anything a driver uses regularly, and especially anything dealing with the vehicle's operation of movement, needs to be tactile. No exceptions. Anything that is accessed far less frequently (bookmarking stations, maintenance reset, HUD settings) or when the vehicle is not supposed to be in motion (seat & mirror adjustment, navigation controls, auto-park) is fair game. No one wants to drive their five-figure machine with a single three-figure glass slate.

This should be tested as part of a safety standard in the same way we test for crashes. Personally I like screens in my car, but would not buy a car with only screen buttons. Sorry Tesla and some new Porches...

Problem solved. Voice commands exist, and are safer than even classic knobs. You can also turn on autopilot and let the car drive itself while you use the touchscreen.

My infotainment screen on my 2017 chevy is horrible . You can not dim it . Very blinding at night. Also.. bad UI..
If you are in Apple CarPlay and listening to pandora or Spotify and you want FM radio you have to take your eyes off the road . Hit the home button .. then source then FM. Why not have a dedicated FM button ? Why over complicate things?

Do cars have to be computers? This is why I drive a 1980 Camaro. No tech except a fairly decent radio with a volume knob. Tech is killing people in cars.

I drive BMW and I'm all too happy they still include that rotating iDrive knob in the center console. Competitors like Audi & Mercedes have gone away from that, but I can just feel the stress if for some reason I need to use the touchscreen in my car while driving. Even something as simple as a manual 'swipe' on the touch screen to 'advance in an audio track'.

While driving, I can run through my audio library to change albums with the rotary knob, no problem. Don't feel stress doing that as I only glance at the screen for under a second before my eyes are back on the road. But doing the same with the touch screen, while going 120 km/h on the highway makes me feel like I'm gonna hit a wall at any moment.

As such, cars only offering a touch interface are literally going backwards in the features it offers, as most of whatever they offer isn't usable while driving.
How stupid would it be that I have to 'give up' being able to select another 'album' to play when the current one is done playing. Gotta search for some place to pull over or something just to say 'change the channel'.

I hate touch screens in cars! The blue light in your eyes at night is so bad, I have dry eye and these would be terrible. It's not safe and they are so ugly how they pop out of the dash like a cheapy looking tablet. Thankfully I own an old car that doesn't have these stupid things but if I ever need to replace it I'm in trouble.
