Element resistors, or Shunts, are produced using a solid piece of resistance material. Shunts are commonly used to measure the current output of a circuit. The voltage drop across the extremely lower resistance value can be used to calculate current flow in high current applications.

By measuring the voltage across the shunt and knowing the shunts resistance value, we then can calculate the current I = V / R

Thanks brother.
By the way this jumper wires affect the measuring because of the there resistance.

just starting electronics and this was very helpful.i am advised I need a shunt resistor or resistance to get good component trace on scope.
I am trying to setup an oscilloscope with a built in waveform generator to produce visual of component curve traces.
does the component bing tested need a certain value shunt resistance ,or do I have to try several resistors to see what gives best visual trace?
thanks

Good vid. The reason why the calc is a bit off is because you measure in between/halfway the wires and clips. The cables and clips you are using also have some resistance especially at a higher current. When you put the shunt at the beginning of the wires it will be more accurate and measures the current thru the whole circuit (with all the losses).

The accuracy of the displays on similar power supplies may not be very accurate at all values. I suggest a 4 wire measurement where you measure the current and voltage to eliminate the influence of the power supply display accuracy. Nice work.

why can't you just put the multimeter in series to get the circuit current, 690mA is quite high - most multimeters will even have a micro ammeter setting won't they?

All the dotty professors and technophobes on utube cannot explain it better than you have. Well done.
