i think that these internet made franchises are also succesful because they have a fundamentally open design

what i mean is that you could seriously do anything with the SCP or Backrooms franchise and it will always make sense

compared to closed designs where you get something like GTA where things only make sense from a real world perspective (and thematically its only the perspective of criminals)

but then there are also open-closed designs where anything could make sense but there are rules, this is how you get something like Super Mario, you could think of infinite power-ups but the power-ups themself can't be literally anything (either mushroom shape, flower shape or other unique shapes that can't be mistaken to a normal ebject)

what also helps with the appeal of the SCP and Backrooms franchise is that the world of them is small

what i mean is that the SCP foundation is essentially a millitairy base so you could put the SCP foundation in any franchise because it wouldn't disturb the world lay-out of those franchises (invidual world)

compare that to something like Final Fantasy where it is an intire world full of characters, lore and has its own science (other world)

and then you have something like James Bond where it takes place on earth, in these type of franchises it only matters what we see in the series because we can assume the rest of world is the same as ours (earth world)

So it’s kinda like one big art project… that’s actually really cool and I say art project but art can really mean anything, writing, film, drawings, games ect… WOULDNT be shocked if someone made a song inspired by scp’s

I look at the SCP and backrooms stories to be a kind of “plug and play” version of traditional horror, allowing any old Joe Schmo to come along and make up a monster to put in these fictional worlds. It sound nice, an infinite amount of creatures to enjoy, but most of them are uninspired fanfic trash, or come off like they’re trying entirely too hard to create something scary. And some of them make stuff that isn’t scary at all. Not everyone has a mind for making horror, just because someone is afraid of stuff doesn’t mean they know anything about the creation of monsters. The few good original ones inspire wave after wave of “look at my OC” type creatures to add to this weird little fictitious catalog.

Both SCP and "Control" sound highly influenced by the 2000 book "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski, thought I'd mention that for anyone who wanted to read a whole novel with a similar sensibility.

Two of my favourites are the tomatoes that accelerate at someone who makes a bad joke, and the acceleration depends on how bad the joke is. People actually got hurt from it.

believe it or not, SCP 3008 was the first SCP I had learned about, I just found it weird, and I learned about it from a roblox game. I decided to dig deeper, and found so many I liked.
