You should start a Blog/Forum. It would be tight to see this become a unbiased raw fashion magazine. Just an Idea

Do you think its possible to go into Fashion Design later after earning a productdesign/interiordesign degree? Because Raf, Samuel Ross, Mugler went that route. I think the lines are blurring between architecture/interior/fashion etc. Personally im studying Productdeisgn right now but my passion for fashion is huge.

Tom Ford studied architecture at Parsons which upon first thought seemed to have nothing to do with fashion design, he even misrepresented himself a little when applying for an internship at Chloe I think, without informing the interviewer that he studied a different program. He went into the business with zero knowledge of sewing or pattern-making. However, he was a genius, and the truth is, his architectural background technically got him off to a good start. It's a similar design system which prepared him with the essential learning skills. Most importantly, the artistic progress that is called Critical Thinking - something that any top art academy program nowadays drills into you during your study. It doesn't come to us naturally unfortunately, most people will have to learn it systematically. It's much more than just the tools and resources and technical helps you need.

Virgil Abloh himself said that the type of designer he wanted to take his place was the type that didn’t have fashion school background. There’s a reason for that. Fashion school can mold designers into a box. He wanted someone who can think and design outside of that box. So for anyone who can’t afford fashion school, don’t let the comments discourage you. Being taught by the best of the best designers does not guarantee you to be the a great designer yourself. Just food for thought

For me studying (formal) fashion design is not really necessary to be a fashion designer. And while I believe taste is personal, going to fashion school really helped me refine my taste level design-wise and construction-wise.

I would adore to study fashion design, not even to become a designer just studying it 🧐 but I’m already studying something else. If you’re going to fashion school I envy you!

I agree with this sentiment. I think that the benefit of going to school is that school (itself) serves as an incubator. a lot of what one will have to do outside of school (i.e. networking) will be laid out for you. also, instead of shooting in the dark to find your interest- there lessons that serve as points of departure for students as they inform themselves on the field, as well as find their interest. a potential con in going to school is that there is (sometimes) a laser focus on how to succeed commercially- oppose to creatively.

what are you all's thoughts?

I would love ur opinion on my journey! I’m a passionate fashion designer currently studying in a 2 yr college but do u think it is important to get a university Bachelors degree when it comes to fashion design? Because I believe that I already have the creative artistry and I just wanted to learn everything else in design such as techniques etc. But now I’m not too sure whether I can be taken seriously for internships now that I don’t ha a degree.

I believe that a fashion designer is someone that has knowledge of the process of create a garment! I don't think is "cool" for somebody that sew panties and hoodies for their merch be considered a fashion designer when they don't even know how to sketch or understand a fashion illustration or even doesn't have knowledge about fabrics at all!! That's what I think. U are amazing ❤️

I really enjoyed this video. I myself study fashion journalism and I feel that formally studying the subject has helped me tremendously. You can learn many things on your own, but sometimes getting an education in something helps you to learn about the subject in a multi-faceted way. I have taken classes in fashion public relations, forecasting, and marketing during my studies. I feel these classes give me tools and different perspectives that allow me to write more knowledgeably on the subject. Fashion is such a broad field that it can be tricky knowing where to guide your attention as you build your knowledge and skillset if you don't take classes in the subject. Of course, formal education in a subject isn't a guarantee or always necessary, but it helps to take away some of the guesswork. Educational costs can be an issue, unfortunately. It is hard to find schools that have some of the other areas of fashion studies and it can be very expensive to do so.

I studied visual communication and photography before going to university. I'm now studying BA Fashion Communication with Business Studies and looking to do my MA in Fashion Communication next year. The more/deeper I've been studying fashion the more I find myself wanting to design however when making that choice when I was younger, I was always naturally drawn to Image Making more. I don't regret my decision because I really love what I do, however I think when you're naturally creative you always want to jump straight into the next thing. Especially after interning at Burberry last year for the Fabric and Trims development team it's really opened my eyes to what more I could do however I don't think everyone is naturally cut out to be a designer and we need people within the other creative aspects of the industry. It's just as important

I’ve felt very strongly about going to school for fashion design for a while and have been told it’s not necessary to have a degree anymore but I feel it is important if I want learn more in depth and work on my craft, I think people forget it’s not just about sewing but so much more. Nowadays people are popping up with “brands” everywhere. Thanks for sharing your perspective

As a technical design student, I cannot stress enough about construction, draping and drafting is extremely crucial, you have to have the fundamental knowledge of construction in order to create garments. Just my two cents.

Hi this is my first time watching your video so excuse me if I ask questions you might have talked about before, I am doing art foundation rn hesitating to do a fashion degree. I am torn between that and Psychology for which I am holding a degree place at uni. I am not a confident person I always think I am not creative enough, definitely not as radical as a lot of art students. Would you say fashion also really requires natural talent? I am also worried that I won't be able to get into CSM as it is really competitive. If you were me what would you do? Any suggestion?

ps. I know this is still my decision after all but would love to have some advices from fashion people. thanks

I think fashion designing needs both experiment and talent equally. U need to experience visually. So if u have the talent u should apply for an internship and learn it pratically. I don’t know the method taught in expensive institutes but I’m studying in a public accademy in italy but I think it’s just waisting time studying it. But i need the degree to apply for internships.

In my opinion you need to study fashion design. Because without those angry teachers puting deadlines for every single project and shouting at you everyday to motivate you. You will never open your mind by yourself to see to search and to think to express..
Its not about sewing or pattern making as much as it about how to think and creat a brand standing for specific clients type.
Being a fashion designer means having your own point of view..
And your point of view must be unique enough because nobody need another galliano theres already one..
Without being in one of the top ten schools in the world its hard to reach thst level of thinking.
Good luck dude

There are no jobs and the ones that are available take advantage and pay really low. I would happy to discuss with you as I'm working on a video about the Fashion industry. Keep up the good work!

I def recommend studying fashion design if you want to be a designer! Having all the info and resources all at once helps a lot in my opinion.
I’m studying Fashion Merchandising at the moment and I’ve learned so much in school, I don’t think I would’ve been able to learn all that info on my own.
