THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! my husband and I purchased a home (michigan) about 5 yrs ago. We have grapes vines but just figured they didn't produce anything and have been just cutting them all down to use as a privacy fence in the summer. This yr there was a very small section with grapes on it just a couple days ago. I've been binge watching how to care for them so we can have more next yr. Your video has been the best help! I have to figure out what kind they are now so I can decide how to prune them (cane or spur). I love what I'm learning! The section that has grapes also has woody nightshade which is toxic. I also have trees and shrubs popping up along my fence. What do I do with these things?!

Great info, thanks James. Now I need to research which method to use with my new grape plants; one is a Concorde and the other is Catawba.

Subscribed after watching this video! Love your energy. I'm a first year gardener (raised bed for my wife) and i'm on year 1 of Grape vine! I only have room for 1 Vine coming off the main stem due to space constraints. I wish i could send you a picture and get some advice on pruning my spurs. I mistakenly pruned my first 3 spurs after the bend to promote growth along my wire (I think thats a mistake?). Now i'm struggling to understand what to prune, within year (its July 3rd 2023), to promote grape flowering next year. i.e. I have multiple spurs coming out of the same bud. Do i let it grow or train it somehow?

I have an arbor...5 vines on each side. My father built the arbor and planted 10+ years ago, passed away and so it hasn't been pruned in years. It produces many grapes, but is just a mess. Where to i start ?

So what if you only have 1 plant? Can you just have more canes? I have had my concord grape plants for a long time. I prune 3 times a year. First prune is usually when I see the clusters start. So I cut off the branch and just leave 2 clusters to grow. Then I go back in a few months to cut the ones trying to grow where I cut the first ones. Then in the fall to keep it under control. I might go back in and take out weak looking branches or ones that aren't growing where I want them to grow.

Excellent video and tutorial. I have a cane pruning variety on the arbor, it’s been 4years now and it finally reach the top of arbor, is this normal it hasn’t been fruiting or flowering before it reaches the top? I left 4 old canes at the bottom, is it too much for the energy?

How do you know which ones to cane or spur? Is it just personal preference or is it dependent on variety?

Hello from the UK. That was a very useful video thank you. Would you have a video on thinning the fruit in the spring or are you likely to do a video soon? I have a 3 to 4 year old vine with one main trunk with lots of spurs coming off. At this time we have thousands of clusters of flowers and I am getting conflicting advice for thinning flowers every 12 inches or 20 inches. You suggested do not prune from the spring but i assume thinning them will be ok? Thanks Steve

Hello James (or anyone who knows). Fellow Jersey boy here. Just put in some Reliance Grapes. Bare root, main stalk, no canes. Once they grow canes this year, how should I prune next year- Cane or Spur?

So I understand it... but if you keep leaving the 1year old growth as canes, in 5 years time, won't the 1 year old canes then be like 12 feet away from the trunk?
Like every year it's taking a step further and further away?
