In old Bukhara, houses typically had no windows facing the street. Instead, the rooms faced inward to a central courtyard, with blank walls facing the street. The only view to the outside world was the door. To manage who was arriving, Bukharians developed this distinctive method, which we explain in this video.

Today, in the historic part of Bukhara, you can find many ‘darvozai kalamakori,’ or handcrafted wooden doors. Some of these doors are over 200 years old, with others being 300 or even 400 years old.
