From what I've heard, a technical solution to the nuclear waste problem already exists or will soon exists. It's a process called accelerator transmutation of waste, and it's been in development for about 20 years.

I've also heard that liquid fluoride thorium reactors could use nuclear waste as fuel and create much shorter-lived radioactive waste as a result.
