I have an Axis, I believe a generation older than yours. I really like the gun. Took a deer with it this year, close range. I am like you, I don't want to carry a super expensive gun banging around in the trees and everything else.

I own 3 Savage rifles, 2 of them are the Axis models. One is a 270 and the last one I bought is a heavy barrel 6.5 Creedmoor, both shoot MOA or under with my reloads and IMHO are some of the most accurate rifles under $1500 out there. The resistance on opening the bolt is because the Axis cocks on opening, I'd rather have it there than on closing when I'm trying to get back on target. They truly are the best bang for the buck out there.

Savage makes great rifles. from the Axis all the way through their top line guns. you can't go wrong with any of them for hunting.

They make a Savage bolt lift kit for that rifle. I have one and it makes the bolt throw much smoother

How do you like the scope on this rifle? Might pick one up whenever I get to Edmonton. The bolt cocks when you lift it which is why you feel the resistance. My Ruger American Ranch was the same way except it cocked when you pulled the bolt back.

Yeah man I enjoyed this video, I'm waiting on my 270 Savage rifle to clear so I can get started dialing mines in. Took the online Hunting Ed class and got my Hunting license so I can start when the season opens up in California. I'm green at this but I guess it's never to late. I'm just watching videos until then getting a better understanding of the rifle...

Just got the new version of this rifle today - It has a heavy barrel and is threaded for a mussel break.
Planning to get a decent scope and break in May.
(Mine didn't come with a scope)

I'll let you know what the heavy barrel is like in the next week! =)

using a shitty scope for now, but I will let you know anyway!

Thanks for the review <3

I just ordered the Axis 2 XP with a stainless barrel and the scope for $442. Should have it next week. My Marlin 30-30 works fine for whitetail deer but I wanted a .308 for when I finally get a moose permit.

I've had my Axis 308 for a couple years and never shot past 100yd. A couple weeks ago I took it to a precision rifle class and was one of a few that was hitting steel at 400. It was at the end of class and kind of a free for all with targets from 100 to 400. I thought it was funny because there was a guy there with his Gucci gas gun, $250 UF Pro combat pants, and high-speed fingerless gloves that couldn't hit much past 200. Just goes to show that Gucci doesn't trump skill.

The gun is trash. The bolt is very stiff And inconsistent. the scope it comes with the bolt handle hits the scope. Much better guns out there for the price do not buy.

I hope you took the scope base off degreased the mount holes and screws lock-tite them down and like wise for the ring screws. The action screws need to be degreased blue lock-tire and torqued 40 inch pounds. These complete units as they leave the factory are full of cutting oil and not torqued to spec. No wonder it’s all over the place. Typical.

Just got me a black Friday one, od green spiderweb and scope .308 for $349, that's cheaper than my axis .350 legend was, I'm budget minded so I can have more different calibers. I'm excited to try this. 308 at the range and then wacking some hogs.

I thought you did a great job making this content. You were articulate and it flowed nicely. I thought you produced it well. Enjoyed it! My Axis did not shoot well at first. I installed and properly torques bases and rings, lapped the rings centric, and leveled the scope. I took it home and cleaned the daylights out of it. Took it back to the range and it shoot sub MOA after 2-3 fouling rounds. I let new hunters I take hunting use it when I take them on their first hunt.

I have this same rifle in .30-06 and my experience has been much the same as yours: an inexpensive ($350usd-otd), decent quality, 'entry level' gun, with 'good enough to decent' accuracy (because of the included Weaver scope). I'm left handed, but I just couldn't pass up this "package deal" when it practically fell into my lap-- In fact, I was looking for a totally different rifle at the time. lol!

I can say that with minimal practice you can make this rifle sub MOA. I took my stock savage axis and just added new scope rings and a bipod and can consistently make sun MOA groups. No accu trigger mind you. BUT in its current configuration it is not a range toy. That pencil barrel heats up fast. Any more than 3 rounds in 20 minutes and you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. It is a cold bore tack driver. Some $2-3k guns have a hard time keeping up with it.

I own multiple savage rifles and they are all tack drivers. If you don’t have one you are missing out.

You should zero at 25 meters and then see how it does at a 100 yard target. It’s a lot faster, cheaper and easier to work your come ups.

Check out a bolt lift kit from desh industries. It'll fix that issue you mentioned about the bolt unlock. Also, magpul makes a stock for it called the hunter lite thats a fantastic upgrade. Itll also allow you to use 10 round acis mags. Theres also a onown issue with the extractor being a bit weak. It can be upgraded also. Happy hunting!
