Xeon E5-2680 V4 vs Xeon E5-2678 V3 & Ryzen 5 5600X

As for September 2023, 2680 v4 set (MB+CPU+RAM) costs €90/100 (16/32 Gb RAM), while 2678 v3 set costs €125/140, so choice is made.
Now it's time to choose used graphics adapter, which would be always loaded at 60%+ at 1080p high settings. 1070/1660/6500 would be too weak, I think, but I have no idea of the next step.

And 2 years later the E5 2680 V4 is $10 cheaper then the E5 2678 V3, so now it makes more sense :)

Recent low prices for E5 Xeon’s v4 changes the conclusion, at least for workstations imo. Plus heat dissipation and motherboard instability of overclocked v3’s may well be an issue. FPS advantage of an unlocked v3 may be undetectable for gaming. I went with the e5-2680 v4, on a stable Asus x99 Prime a-II with 64GB of ecc registered memory, no regrets.

2690v4 going for 40euros now. 2680v4 for 20e. (May2023)

Great video! Thank you! Have you ever tested the 2697 v3? It's cheaper than both now and has the same cores as the 2680 v4 with a slightly higher clock, but I'm not sure if you can unlock the turbo boost.

It'd be nice to see some multi workload benchmarks. These server CPUs are designed for simultaneous services running in tadem, not to mention dual CPU configurations and quad channel memory. Run a bunch of vm together in a cluster and see how the story changes. Nonetheless, gaming is a popular scenario to benchmark, along with rendering some media, it's a classic.

The e5 2680 v4 is cheaper than the 2678 v3 now. Would you recommend it? Can the 2680v4 be used with cheap motherboards with low quality VRM's? Would you recommend buying cpu + motherboard + ram combos? When using mi899 which motherboards support sleep mode with turbo boost unlock? I saw in your x99 rs9 review that sleep mode is not supported. Will x99 boards on e5 v4 cpus sleep?

I run dual 2680 v4 Xeon for video encoding when friend of mine runs 7980XE OC, we get about the same results in Handbrake. Used 7980XE is cheap now, but Dual 2680 v4 is still better value because you don't have to spend extra money for OC. Both are really good value and almost twice as cheap as a new 5950X. I am really curious about the 12900K, so far it looks good, 1/3 cheaper than 5950X and about the same performance in encoding, rendering.

Picked up a 2690 v4 for a little over $200 Us a few months back. I picked it up as a replacement for my e5-1620-3 and I've been impressed. My Cinebench r15 score is now 2302. I also found that quick cpu's performance settings helped improve my score by about 400 points.

I would guess that gaining performance by disabling Hyperthreading is situational. If you have enough cores, disabling HT makes enough difference to increase turbo boost potential, and because you still have 12,14,16 cores your game doesn't have any negative scaling due to lack of capacity, therefore higher overall performance. I would guess, though, that this is mostly only true on high core count, but lower clocked, processors that are not typically chosen for gaming anyways.
