The twins look creepy because they are two boys dressed as girls.

I'm not sure which video I've seen it on (am binge watching) but when Jack is in the Gold Room and it is filled with people, Jack dances and a lady in a white dress passes.. is that menstruation blood on the back of her dress or weird shadow?

Do you think we'd all have been happy if we hadn't overanalyzed Kubrick's movies to death?

a lot of the time I'm not the most intuitive guy with how the lights are used to convey the plot, but the scene in Halloran's home with the light in the background seems very clear to me. He's all the way back home where things are relatively normal (not shining) but far far away in the overlook hotel, he's sensing a great disturbance (the shining). the room he is in is dark, but the room furthest from our perspective is shining.

Changed skies above the maze? Crazy continuity issues all throughout the film? Maybe the weather changed because the scenes inside the maze were filmed at different times...

I think that J.J. Abrams may have been inspired by the lighting, for his Lost series.

The chandelier lighting in the finale is just confirming that we’re dealing with unreliable narration. Supporting all the clues we were given earlier. This finale lighting actually points to the Wendy Theory, since it never happened. She already dragged Jack to the maze a few hours ago.

And this video reminded me why I found this film so creepy at the non scary bits- the parts where dannys pedalling though the halls, tracking shots of the actors walking through the hotel, always made me feel my heart in my stomach. That is a genius horror film in my opinion:) I love your videos as they are very much ,like you say, original perspectives. Also the maze scene made me feel so uneasy everytime I watched it, especially the bit with the creeping music with Wendy and Danny. Also the birds eye view shot is eerie, they almost look animated / cartoon-ish when you see them both walking .. if you know the bit I'm on about. Curious to know if anyone else thought that scene appears like that ?

Kubrick was a professional photographer before he was a director so he'll be clued up on lighting for sets.

Phone low on charge, haven't watched this particular analysis (but plan to). But how is it that Danny Loyd the child actor is claimed to have a British accent? Can't figure. Never could pick it up after watching the Kubrick version many a hundred times. But will take into consideration this: (1)most of the filming of the movie took place in the UK (2) children immediately pick up behaviors and syntaxes that they hear around them (most technical workers on the Shining set were British). (3) many "English" accents somehow got exported to the "southern" U.S.

It is one of the best movies of all time period. Should of won numerous Academy Awards.

Can one find those same lighting inconsistencies in other Kubrick's movies?

Couldn’t it be simple that Kubrick just took many short cuts in his filming and set placements. To achieve a satisfactory shot he chose indoor set and the same for an outside shot sequence. Never predicting that people would be trying to decipher his filming tricks and such. I’m mainly referencing the maze scenes from entering to then switching sets once inside the maze.

Here's a quick dumb take---the part where the whole family is in the car going to the Hotel and they are talking about the Donner Party, and Wendy is concerned about telling Danny about such things---but Danny reassures her, and Jack echoes, by saying that it's okay because he learned all about cannibalism on TV---what do TVs do? They SHINE images into our homes. What is in those images? A lot of horrifying things that we have no control over. What prompts Dick Hallorann to go back to Colorado from his comfortable winter retreat to Florida? A report about apocalyptic snow storms that he sees on the TV. It's like, television introduces horror into our lives not through darkness but through light. Idk.

There is way too much over thinking in these videos. I'm sure that Kubrick just did what worked in each scene in benefit of the artistic result not thinking about continuity or meaning to deliberately play with our minds. After all it's a supernatural plot to begin with. Ghosts, spirits, zombies are already present in a vast interior location. Of course changes in the lighting are in order. What I always admire, is the natural way that Kubrick is lighting the scenes. That is awesome and along with the cinematography, gives this unique perspective of actually being there.

In my opinion, all the overlit corridors and rooms of the near empty hotel being inexplicably on are meant to be a subtle psychological hint that the Torrence family are constantly being watched by the malevolent force that occupies the hotel. They aren't really alone there.

What about Kubrick's mistake of not including the hedge maze in the opening shot of the hotel?

My hunch is that the lights in the hotel are the main horror factor. They litteraly light up all the darkness that has been hidden all these years and make it come alive. Also, when we see an aerial vieuw of the hotel, there is nog gigantic maze. Yet it seems to be right next to it when Danny and Wendy enter it.

Just a suggesting...
what if the scene where Wendy and Danny enter the maze was shot in the morning and the scenes of them walking inside the maze were shot at noon?
That would remove the shadows, and illuminate the most of the maze, as it appears to, and it would not require any extra trickery.

It was obviously Danny who turned on all the lights since anyone with kids can attest to the fact that they love playing with light switches. That's probably what caused Jack to lose it! ;)

Just kidding, of course. Excellent analysis as always Rob - really love your content!
