The 1st one is the darkest because the not only are DK and Diddy are badly injuried, it look like they are looking at the player and blaming them like "look what do you did to use"

Donkey Kong country's gameover screens gave me nightmares

I liked how whenever you fell down a hole in DKC, there's no game over music playing, just the level's soundtrack and the popping of the Lives balloon. It's like a momentary silence to let you know how you screwed up.

DK 64 isn’t accurate. You can’t get a Game Over if you die, you have unlimited lives. You should’ve literally quit the game to get the Game Over.
