This is is one of the best confrontations I've ever seen! I was on the edge of my seat when I first saw this. There are no accusations or denying happening here. Armin just says that Annie spared him and she confirms it like they both already know this. Eren desperately wants to believe that this isn't real. I think I felt the same. I didn't think Annie was the female titan until this scene happened. Even though they are so similar in appearance, I didn't believe it. Maybe I just didn't want to believe it.

When Annie talks to armin why does she put a “certain tone” to it

Now in season 4 after writing Annie out of 2.75 seasons the author really didnt know what to do with her.
So last minute, unfounded, cringeworthy feelings that was forced last minute.
"uhhhhh lets give Annie a crutch. I unno what else to do with her because the worlds on fire and i waited until the rumbling to break her out."
So yes in season 4 Annie now has last minute forced cringeworthy feelings for Armin and vice versa.

Annie likes Armin in season 4 because...?
Oh he visited her after betraying her and calling her heartless "YOU HAVE TO MATCH HER HEARTLESSNESS TO WIN" S1 Ep25 and a "traitorous CREATURE" S2 ep 1. .....uhhhhh okay?
Well may she likes him because he gave her company. That's nice! EXCEPT ARMIN DIDNT VISIT ANNIE UNTIL AFTER HE ATE BERTHOLT and started seeing his memories.
All of season 2 and 3 Armin didnt visit Annie even one time. Despite having plenty of time back home to do so between missions. So he never really cared about her enough to even visit her until Bertholt was in his head Uhhhhhhh...okay?

Well maybe Annie likes Armin because now ARMIN has killed innocent people too and can relate. Wow...that doesnt sound healthy.
Thats empathy and relatability...not love. And if we are using THAT as an explanation (i cant withstand anymore cringe) then by that logic ANNIE could love anyone that was left over scooby gang chasing after Eren. Jean, Mikasa, Reiner, Connie, Armin, Hanje, Levi...because after their raid on Liberio in Marley ALL of them are like Annie, in this way. With innocent blood on their hands. So...she picked Armin out of this group similarity because??? Searching...searching...searching...no reason found in show or manga.
So Annie's question to Armin on the boat is the script being self aware of the cringe, "BUT WHY...?" >_<

How about Armin in season 4? He likes Annie now after betraying her, and she tried to kill him, and he called her a heartless traitorous creature...but now he likes her...after spending four years staring at her while she sleeps. THERE IS NO WAY FOR ME TO SPIN THAT IN A POSITIVE LIGHT. I'm sorry Armin can you get your face away from mine? Im about to puke.
Thats 4 years worse than what a certain Vampire did in Twilight watching the girl sleep one night. Hang on i have to go vomit...Okay I'm back.
Okay so MAYBE Armin loves Annie now because...Bertholts memories? Which would make Armins feelings influenced at best completely borrowed at worst.

Yeah...so their season 4 romance is...terrible writing. Which the author recently ACKNOWLEDGED having taken it on the chin in the S4 reviews. The one black spot in the season is Armin Annies forced cringe romance. Everyones on his case about it. And he acknowledged he didnt really know what he was doing here "Writing romance really isnt my thing" oh it shows.

But no Annie didnt have feelings besides friendship with Armin in season 1. No. Annie loves EREN in season 1. She gave him HER scarf. You shippers miss so many huge details about Annie and Armin because you are desperate to ship a boat with a large hole in it than the Titanic. Unfortunately the Author jumped on that sinking ship in season 4... Pure cringe.

Fun fact shippers. ANNIE DOESNT LOVE ARMIN IN SEASON 1 HERE SHE IS TRYING TO KILL HIM because SHE HATES HIM Oh? Don't believe me? Rewatch this episode. I dare you. Let's review:
Annie transforms. Eren gets buried in rubble. But Annie is furious with Armin for being like everyone else, somebody who is willing to manipulate her for his own agenda.
After Annie knocks Mikasa out of the air she turns back, but she isnt going for Eren who is trapped, its that Armin is standing next to him.
Thats who Annie is targeting. She gave up on her mission the day before after considering all the death she caused during the 57th Expedition (note that in 3/4 of the fights she didnt strike first thats because she was softening due to attachments to these people).

So Armin is standing next to Eren trying to pry him out. How do we know Annie wants to kill Armin in her rage and isnt going after Eren? Overwhelming evidence:
~Armin is next to trapped Eren
~Annie approaches them
~But after Armin makes her even angrier by challenging her bet, she chases after him.
~EREN IS STILL TRAPPED. If she wants him she would scoop him up now!
~SHE GOES FOR ARMIN. Not once, but twice. She charges after Armin leaving Eren trapped in two sets of rubble...if she wants Eren then...
~The last interaction Annie has with Armin before she crystalizes herself is her OUTSTRETCHED HAND TRYING TO KILL ARMIN in mid air.
~THE ONLY REASON she doesnt kill Armin here is because Hanje fires the cable cannons tying her up as her hand is about to grab and kill Armin.

Rewatch the episode if you think im making this up. ANNIE WANTS TO KILL ARMIN. She is furious with him.
~Later on after Annie beats the crap out of Eren yet again, leaving him a concussed pulp up against a building after going hammer fist on his skull, she could easily rip him out of the nape like in the forest. Instead she gives him a pitiful look and RUNS AWAY TO THE WALL. Eren recovers and gives chase.
ANNIE. WANTS. TO KILL. ARMIN. She isnt in love with him at this point at all. She HATES HIM.

You guys need to grow up and understand the story. When Annie looks down at Armin twice on the field he is helpless.
She didnt kill him the first time because she was pulling punches with him due to attachments just like with everyone else.
Thats why she marched on each flank looking for Eren (rewatch it) and not seeing him RUNS ALONG the horses doing nothing.
SHE COUNTER attacks every time somebody grapples on to her. She goes through two groups without attacking first ever.
The second time she spares Armin because he was smart enough to put on his hood knowing she was looking for a specific target.

When she looks down at him both times, he is helpless. JUST. LIKE. MARCO.
That's right, the answer to the question "Why didnt I kill you back then?" is because Armin and Marco were similar people.
Gentler souls who had optimism and hope for man going forward. Who were slow to anger and violence. Who were very trusting in nature and believed the best in people.

Thirty two days prior, Annie watched Marco beg for his life helplessly in Trost. Now Armin's life is in her hands just like Marco's.
She cant do it a second time because of her GUILT OVER MARCO. This is supported by the OVA that opens with Annie waking up from nightmares of Marco screaming for her help before he dies. She wakes up shaking the MORNING before the 57th expedition in this state.
Annie didnt kill Armin twice because he is so like Marco and his vulnerability in those situations reminded her of Marco.

This is the writing SHIPPERS never notice. For pete sake REINER was even there when Armin was down and out. Just like Reiner was there with Marco.
If JEAN hadnt arrived after Armin fired a flare Annie would have been pushed to kill Armin by Reiner if the three were alone.
That flare Armin fired? That got Jean to show up? SAVED ARMINS LIFE FROM ANNIE.
Reiner was NOT happy watching Annie spare Armin, but because JEAN showed up, Reiner couldnt threaten Annie's father to get her to act like with Marco.
If there was no Jean? Annie would have been pushed by Reiner to finish Armin off.
YUUUUUUUUUUUUP. At this point the shippers eyes are wide in denial but the tape and manga dont lie. Rewatch the last few Ep of season 1.

Annie HATES Armin in this scene. She doesnt love him. She is disgusted by him.
Him proving hes no better than her, no better than anyone else in this world. They all manipulate and use her.
Her Father, Marley's military, commander McGath, Reiner etc...but Annie viewed Armin as an ethical person.
A good person. She desperately wishes she was a good person too.
Thats why she followed him to what she knew was a trap.
THAT'S WHY SHE LAUGHED. Because the one ethical good person she thought she knew played dirty, shattering her faith in him or in ANYONES ABILITY TO STAY GOOD IN THIS WORLD.
In this episode she tells Marlo, "Whats the point? I think if a do-gooder like yourself got to a high rank as an MP i think you would soon find yourself WORKING ALONE."
Annie believes all people will eventually turn bad in this world. But she held out hope that Armin was different and he failed her, by manipulating her to follow him to a trap.
She wasnt going for Eren anymore she walked away as soon as this golden opportunity fell in her lap. "I will have to decline Armin, but my lips are sealed, good luck."
ANNIE IS HEADING BACK OUT TO THE CONVOY WHERE SHE NOW KNOWS EREN ISNT. Instead of agreeing to come with ARMIN to go where Eren is. ANNIE GAVE UP ON HER MISSION long before this scene.

THATS WHY HER FIRST WORDS AFTER HER NERVOUS BREAK DOWN are her twisting the knife back at Armin because he wounded her.
"You know Armin? Its nice that I could be a good person for you"
You can hear a mocking sarcastic tone when she says "good person" and it only is heard for these two words of the sentence.

OH AND IT GETS BETTER. Lets fire off one last torpedo to sink this season 1 Armin Annie ship once and for all.
In the Manga? ANNIE. LOVES. EREN. Not Armin.
YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP. Screw your deluded ship. Sinking faster than the titanic.

Who is the only person Annie has any physical contact with outside of sparring? EREN.
Who is the ONLY PERSON she smiles at? EREN.
Who did she let her walls down for the most? EREN.
Annie offering to train Eren "If you like that technique so much, maybe I can teach you...nonsense! I insist!" is like EREN giving Mikasa his SCARF.
All Annie has ever learned is her fighting technique. When Annie OFFERS to give it to Eren its her giving him HER SCARF.
This is so obvious to Mikasa that in the manga she tells Annie to keep away from Eren and in the japanese version of the show says "Eren has special feelings" for Annie.
Implying THATS why he cant transform in the tunnel, to fight her DESPITE seeing her Shift into the Titan that is now hunting Armin.

So to recap:
The season 1 ship of Armin Annie is dead in the water.
Annie didnt spare Armin because she had any feelings like love. Its because she had softened around the Scouts and ARMIN reminded her of MARCO in every way.
Also Jean was there otherwise Reiner pushes Annie to kill Armin in a heartbeat.
ANNIE LOVED EREN in season 1. HELL EVEN THIS ENTIRE EPISODE who is Annie having flashbacks about that she really admires? EREN.

Your season 1 ship has always been a joke.

Annie could have literally transformed into a Titan before those people grabbed her but, I get why she didn’t, for plot reasons. It’s good that Mikasa reacted so quickly, she has a good eye

Eren is just as annoying as in the last season & mikassa.....
I can't say much if you haven't watched it all but goddam I hate Eren the most.

Not gonna lie, I had goosebumps during this whole scene the first time I saw it. I genuinely thought it wasn't Annie that was the Female Titan, and when that moment for her to show her true colors came, she showed us who she really is. When Marley calls Eldians devils, anyone ever wonder if they are deliberately making them out to be devils by forcing honorary Marleyans to bear the Nine Titans and turning traitorous Eldians into Titans for war?

Edit: I now noticed that dub and sub gives such a different feeling to armin when he's confronting annie. In the original he sounds more bitter and almost angry in a cold way like he feels personally betrayed by her, in the dub he sounds like he's shitting himself 😭 like he's still in denial.
