There are lots of huge cars from that era too. Japanese cars tend to be small by necessity, since Japan has lots of tiny crowded streets. Also, back then you didn't need a whole lot in terms of safety, electronics, fancy chassis design or other feature that take up space -- hence the cars are smaller.
