I don't think Sallie has ever let go of Sam. I think it's that entity that's been following them around in all the latest videos. Including the conjuring house.

I don't think it means Sam any harm, I think it's just feeding of the residual fear and emotions that old buildings contain. Because all the videos have the same behaviour from the ghosts, the same responses on the spirit box etc...

It really really feels like a playful entity that just takes on the roles of all the local legends for them, since it knows that's what Sam and Colby are looking for. Hence why none of the excorsim stuff etc works, all that is designed for malevolent beings. Sallie is not "evil" she just needs a host.
