Converting office building to housing sounds great but the reason there was a need for housing is because those same office buildings were full of people. Now that a good chunk of high end jobs have left i don't see how you replace it.

DUH? …. Perhaps the vacancy rate of offices in SF is influenced by the the fact that since the pandemic the number of people working from home has tripled to over 28 million. The number of people who switched from physical retail store shopping to digital online shopping. And lastly, the huge increase in the numbers of homeless people since the pandemic. This will soon be reflected in other cities. It’s already started in LA, in London …. Just wait and see.

Replacing California's elected officials beginning with Newsom would be the first step in the right direction.

Mental health issues, homelessness, drug abuse, crime and safety. Get these things addressed and then watch things improve

If you moved out before 2015, the housing market did crash slightly but now it's up atleast 1/3 of its price or more. Most people will have to mortgage.

Too expensive a place. Too expensive parking and not enough parking,expensive rent, have to play bridge toll to get there, lot of crimes, lot of drugs, lot of homeless, theft's, expensive food and restaurants- they were the first to put 10%, 15% and 20% tips on everything, high taxes. Illegal migrants- that get perks. You name it and more. What tech are they talking about? Cant blame people for wanting to leave San Francisco and moving elsewhere or out of state.

The cost to repurpose office towers into residential makes it a pipe dream in my opinion.

SF is NOT a boom-bust town and never was. Phoenix is an example of Boom-Bust (based on 7-10 year real estate cycles). Btw, IKEA's planned move to Market St began years before Pandemic. One more thing about commercial RE moving forward - there is no financing available. Buildings are upside down on declining rent rolls AND high expenses (labor, taxes, utility costs, insurance) have exploded to the upside catching owners off guard. 20 due in 5 loans (typical in CRE) are NOT being renewed as the deals no longer make sense. Unless owners bring in cash the cash flow is not sufficient at 1.25 DCR to service debt.

When your Governor blindly follows insane COVID shutdown policies because he wants to be seen as following the “science”. Also if your mayor is comparing your city to its 1907 version, you’re probably in a lot of trouble.

I visited San Francisco as a foreigner in the early 2010s and it was one of the best moments in my life. I absolutely loved the city. I can't believe it has turned to this. I have never visited after that so it's hard to believe that such a great city collapsed like this within 10 years

Might there be a silver lining or even a good opportunity to alleviate the high cost of housing problem by changing a lot of vacant space in downtown to residential rather than commercial? Nobody wins if these grand buildings are left unused and at the same time living in the city remains too expensive to consider for middle class people.
