I like to believe the Combine had kidnapped some people, and testing them on which rank they would succeed on.

Elites. - Trained Firearm Users, hence the better accuracy, they kept this memory unlike others. Presumably more on bodybuilders or people in a military. Probably the HECU most likely included, meaning a Elite Rank.

Soldiers/Shotgunners.

Semi-new users to firearms, only viable in sections that didn't need many protection, needing only basic grenades. Using rookies or private military personnel, which is why they don't have as well accuracy compared to the Elites.

As for Shotgunners, same thing. Expect, they were more effective in close-up combat, hence why almost everytime you fight against a Shotgunner, they're close enough to get a meatshot.

Civil Protection - Basically new to firearms, joined by force or a slightly better life. Use only Manhacks compared to grenades for assistance, and had more APC Support. Which is why you only see 1 APC outside of City-17 and Route Kanal.


Stalkers. - Resisted against the Combine, or was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Fun fact:
In the entire Nova Prospekt chapter we have a total of 7 allied turrets to use. If we successfully bring all of them to the teleporter chamber then those shiny white armor guys will die before reaching the scripted position and staring at us.

15 melee damage doesn't sound a lot, but if you think about it, rebels have 40 HP. That means a Combine elite can actually knock out or kill a person with just 3 hit with the rifle stock

my opinion to combine elite:
-Armored
-Using cursed modified AK-47
-Suck at shooting (Rebel did better)
-Laser gun that make their enemy become dust
-Friendly fire on (Can kill his buddy accidentally)
-Profesional radio chatter
-Small burst attack
-Run bit slow

when I first saw the elites I thought they were combine scientists due to how they looked. Like a diffrent take on the white lab coat.

Not only they do more melee damadge, but the dont flinch from being hit with non-lethal gravity gun props and crowbar hits

Til this day I wonder why elite combine wear jackboots meant for ceremonial or officer purposes

I feel like the collar acts as a neck protective device specifically against shrapnel blasts from explosions. The demoman from TF2 has a similar collar, and wears armor that (it can be implied) is designed to protect him from blasts due to his dangerous line of work.

I imagine their faces being removed and covered by a metal plate, just like the stalkers. No eyes nose or mouth, just ports that attach to the helmet.

I never considered that they have one big eye, I figured they were like the Tau and just used a camera for sight from their helmets

They look like Aperture turrets

These guys are a huge visual change.
In most playthroughs, the players don't even notice the change between the MetroCops and the OverWatch Soldiers, but all of them react to these ones.

Imagine how hot they must feel in that uniform. From what I can see, they wear heavy padded armor on top of a jumpsuit or some sealed biohazard protective clothing under what might just be their regular uniforms.

The final segment of the Overwatch Soldier's behavior should be used on the entire game for all Overwatch Soldiers.

What if Combine Elites have NO modification whatsoever? The hostile cracked-skull imagery and service ribbon suggest they've willingly and gladly put down earlier uprisings.

I really wish there'd be a Deserter Rebellion, imagine fighting alongside Vorts and former Combine soldiers with their armbands replaced with Lambdas , and the leader would be an vestless and helmetless combine elite with a giant Lambda he etched onto his skin, which would probably accompany you on a quest, and would give out similar dialogue as a Vort when killing an enemy.

If you are asking how the soldiers would've been freed from brainwashing or mind control, I'd say it would be something like cleansing their Vortesence or something, like clearing their mind, or if it's mind control, it would be vortigaunts hitting combine soldier in the right spot to override the system.

but there would be only a handful of them around, most of them are probably from other Cities, cause alot of them would've either commited suicide or had been automatically terminated service (electrocuted from the suits), and most of the Deserters would have lesser technology, like having the XM29 instead of the standard pulse rifles, and would be as weak as a standard rebel, cause all of them had their armor removed from their bodies, and replaced with salvaged Metrocop armor, but they would still have the tactical knowledge as Combine soldiers, which would make them a better fighter than standard rebels.

It may be possible that combine elite helmets have only one red eye is because it might be possible due to the further augmentation or to show that they are more menacing in some way. Their uniform is only white (and red) to show that white is cum (no. Do not take that seriously.) or it may be much like the Star Wars stormtroopers, they sacrifice their potential of staying hidden due to their value of the empire. The elite may also be a field commander or outpost commanders other than a heavy response unit or personal guard for Dr. Wallace Breen.

The Combine Elite look like Turrets from Portal and Portal 2, if they were to be human.
