Are we "wrong"? NOPE!
Why?
Because we use "more" most of the time, so nobody would consider that "more" should mean "a dollar and few cents".
Also, what if the ball is 3 cents?
You can't guess that "more" means "5 cents" with math, since people use the word "more" all the time.
Also, people who suck at math are not "dumb". They just suck at math.

In school, some teachers teach that if there is a word "more" it means add
So some people/students would think of it like
1$ + x (ball price) = 1.10

So you can say part of the misunderstanding is caused by some teachers.

But wait wouldn't be the following answer also correct
The ball price can range from 0.01 to 0.09?

So here's the deal, by that logic the bat would be 1 dollar 5 if the ball was 5 cents. Therefore 1 dollar

An intelligent person who does something stupid, is not intelligent… plain and simple…

When he asked the question my brain immediately shouted 10cents almost involuntarily but I just knew that was wrong. So I paused and calculated and then gave the right answer. Also, I think I'm decisive and pretty inclusive and considerate with people.
This is why they say a jack of all trades is a master of none but is always better than a master of one. I learnt different things from music to art to sports and that made me a more well rounded person and I guess that filled some of my mindware gaps.

That bat and ball question is interesting. Even though you'd heavily suggested most get this wrong, as I was writing out x+x+$1=$1.10, my brain still said 'Ball = $0.10', before I though x=$0.01/2=$0.05

One possibility: $1.1 / 2 = 0.55 (The bat and the ball costs $0.55 and together $1.10)
Second possibility: $1.10 - $1 = $0.10 (the bat costs one dollar more, but still we don't know the price of both so) 0.10 / 2 = $0.05. The price of the ball.

So, my explanation is not like this. We think its 0.55 the price of both, and mathematically its not wrong. Anyway there are more possibilities than we may think. The bat costs $1 more, but the question didnt tell us the price of it. So dividing the 0.10 by 2 will give us the price of both, as we would do (1.10 / 2 = 0.55).

The sad thing is that, as soon as he gave the right answer for that opening question... My brain readjusted, and saw what I did wrong, even before his next sentence. Damn - that does make me feel a tad dumb

I have a daughter who is incredibly intelligent, but for the longest time, didn't have a shred of common sense. Happily, in her 40's, she's starting to grow into some wisdom.

If the bat costs a dollar more than the ball, wouldn't the logical conclusion have always been to subtract the dollar from the total and then divide the remainder by two? I don't understand how someone assumes the bat costs a dollar.

I tried solving the problem by actually writing it down as an equation, but still got it wrong.

Good question in this video, I do stupid things, bc I want to test every possible way and outcome of a subject. I do stupid things, bc iam a nerd who's obsessed with too much knowledge as I became selfaware. I do stupid things for an experiment!

I think we shouldn't only do IQ tests but instead a test that poses questions from multiple categories, like the video already mentioned. I, personally am very bad at maths but I know myself very well and am very empathetic. Also I love being creative and can learn languages rather fast. My point is, just because someone might not do that great on a logic based IQ test, does not mean that someone is stupid. It just means people have different types of intelligence.

This is just a basic math exercise of Secondary school in Vietnam
