Titan's one modicum of respectability as a supervillian was when he deduced that Metro Man was really Megamind in disguise.

You know. We talk about Megamind a lot, but less so Metro Man. Can we appreciate the design going into his naming convention and what he chooses to be in the end?

A thing I also noticed, feel free to correct me.
I feel that if MetroMan really did die by that Death Ray, his cape would also be burned to crisp alongside the skeleton that's left behind, as well as a few flames. The one that MetroMan throws is perfectly clean and his cape is barely affected. So I feel like that could also be a good foreshadow or indicator that MetroMan faked it

If Megamind ever gets a sequel, I want his next villain to be his polar opposite when Megamind was the villain. If Megamind was about bombastic presentations and theatrics, this villain would prefer to be the puppetmaster who prefers to be in the shadows, hiding behind many locked doors and masks. This new villain should also be able to match wit and intelligence with Megamind in terms of back and forth dialogue. I think the main struggle for Megamind would be partially learning how to deal with the hero's life, as well as learning how to contend with a villain who is just as intelligent but far more sinister and learning how to use his intellect in ways he was never really challenged in doing. Remember so far Megamind has used his intellect for inventions and engineering to even the odds against Metroman's sheer strength. All of this will require Roxanne's help, she will probably help him see things in a different perspective on how to tackle the villain's modus operandi.

I'd argue that Megamind was never the "villain" despite how he carried that persona. He essentially treated his rivalry with Metro Man like a role-playing game where he wants to be the "bad guy."

I like how Hal is like the only legitimately bad person in this movie lol
Sure, Megamind and Minion do evil things, but from what we see, they don't hurt people. Worst they do is steal stuff and cause property damage

Metroman is arrogant, but he's not a bad person. He cares about these people, but he wants to live for himself, and follow his passions

Hal is a loser incel who takes advantage of his powers. Uses it for his own gain instead of helping people

And Roxanne is just a random chick caught in the middle of these conflicts lol

I still think Megamind is somewhat of a sociopath. The moment where he thought he killed Metroman, he was like, "Yeah okay, that just happened." We have been shown that he can care for other humans, just that it was not a concept he was familiar. But that particular moment, showed that he was okay with murder, and that is why I say he is a sociopath.

What I like is how they portrayed Megamind, Tighten (or hal), and Metroman. Megamind is a likeable villain turned hero through his backstory of how he became a villain while also showing his view of being the villain. Metroman we see as the hero who goes along with Megamind's game. Despite his ego and how unlikeable he is seen as a kid, we don't actually hate him, especially when he's an adult and is officially a superhero. We don't hate the character and we actually still like him. Hal though we see him as an awkward guy who fumbles hard trying to get with Roxxane and his conversation about what he would do if he had powers already makes him sound like a creep. He's already a bit of an unlikeable character before he got his powers, but becomes hateable when he gets them and becomes the villain.

The most interesting thing is how the three of them want to be something different than what others want them to be. Megamind is a villain to others but wants to be seen as a good person, not the good guy, a GOOD person. Metroman is the hero but wants to give up being hero and just live a normal life. Tighten just wanted to girl because he believed if he had powers it instantly made him the good and "cool" guy and he gets the girl, but he wants to become the villain after not getting the girl

There was the ine thing that Metroman taught Megamind. If you fight for something you'll suceed. Megamsn had nothing but his ego. It wasn't until Roxanne was part of his life he found a reason to win and become the hero he was supposed to be.

I don't really like comparing Megamind to Despicable Me because they may be similar on the surface (villain main character becomes good), but they are fundamentally different stories.
Megamind is a nature vs nurture story that takes a good character who grew up thinking he should be evil. Once he succeeds and has control of the town, he lacks purpose because being evil isn't fulfilling. Over the course of the film, he finds connection with Roxanne, who gives him a new purpose: finding connections with others. In the end, through being shown kindness for the first time in his life and learning that he can be more than a bad guy, Megamind's good nature prevails over his terrible upbringing because he lets go of the the idea that he must be a villain because it's what he was destined to be. This is paralleled by Hal, who is trained by Megamind in disguise to be a hero, but when he can't have Roxanne, he's happy to become the villain and cause destruction just because.

Despicable Me is a redemption story about a man who is, genuinely, bad-natured. He has no given reason for being a bad guy, but he'll hurt others just for his own convenience. He's only doing poorly as a villain because he's too incompetent to do anything big. Gru, unlike Megamind, doesn't discover that he was good all along or that he doesn't have to be what he was told he was. He just is this way. When he takes on 3 orphan children to help him with a heist, their presence in his life warms his heart and he starts to change his nature. He learned kindness through the unique connection parents have with their children, and his heart was warmed. In the end, he saves his children and the moon goes back to where it belongs, by some miracle, and rights itself.

Megamind is also a subversive story that twists the whole superhero/supervillain dynamic by showing the first hero as being arrogant and attention loving, yet similar to Megamind because he wanted to be something other than the hero he was forced to be. Meanwhile the second hero commits atrocities when he can't get what he wants. Megamind is supposed to be the villain, but he turns out to be best suited for the hero role. Despicable Me isn't a subversion of the status quo. It's just a heartwarming story about a bad person becoming good

Can we just talk about how messed up Megamind’s situation is. He crashed into a prison and was kept there for literally no reason. This prison was not even juvenile detention, it was an adult prison filled with adults male criminals. Megamind was also barely supervised, being left alone with the other inmates. Very secretly dark if you ask me.

The fact that Megamind legit didn't believe beating Metro Man was possible, so when he did apparently win, he had no clue what his actual goals were is hilarious. He was just going through the motions, and when there was even a slight hint at change, he had no clue how to handle it, even to the point of trying to create another hero as good as Metro Man just so he'd have his old life back.

Which was just another hint something was up.

Looking back at the start of the film you realize that megamind only ever did evil because that was the role he'd been assigned. He got no enjoyment from hurting people and only did so to get metro man's attention, he never had any major policies he wanted to enforce when he had power over the city, and he got bored of stealing things pretty fast. Hal on the other hand got plenty of pleasure from all those things, hence why he became a bad guy the second he could.

This movie just works so well as an answer to the "nature vs nurture" debate, while also appealing to humanity's innate desires. His father says he is destined for greatness, but his landing site is a prison, where the criminals teach him wrong vs. right. Did he ever have a chance at being good if that's all he was taught?

And yet we see Megamind wishing for human connection, something we all want, even if we don't admit it. At school, he tries hard to be a good friend to kids who don't particularly like him. Eventually he turns to the dark side. But even that is a mask he puts on.

The saddest scene in Megamind for me is the scene in the beginning, when Megamind is put into the back of the prison bus while Metro Man flies off with the school. Megamind has ruined this school. He's laid child-sized waste to the school and its students. He WANTS them to see him as the villain. But when Metro Man picks up the school building and flies away with it, you see Megamind's smile drop. He's sad to see these people leaving him. He hid that sadness right up until he knew nobody would see him, and then he let himself feel hurt. Poor kid Megamind was LONELY, and he never REALLY got past that until he finally let himself open up to Roxanne and be known. He only grew as a person when he was able to admit the pain he went through, able to admit his loneliness, able to admit that he wanted actual human connection, and wanted it all along.

@LogeenthLive
@LogeenthLive - 18.10.2023 15:19

I think what makes Megamind the perfect hero for me is that he learns to take back his right to be the hero of his own story. His entire life, he told himself that he was going to be the bad guy because that's just what he believed - he was pretty much raised in prison, he was ostracized by his peers, and it shaped him to believe that being bad is good. Even still, he doesn't even have the heart to be truly evil. His evil is, for the most part, basically an act - it's just a means to fill a void that he cannot explain.

And when Metro Man 'dies', he is forced to realize that being evil is just not what he is, and his initial state of denial was what made him give rise to Tighten - when he uncovers that he still can change who he is, he stops being the Number 2 in his tale and steps up to be the hero that he knows he can be, and I think that's what makes him perfect for me.
