Bull Elk | .308 Hammer Hunter 181gr. Bullet

I’ve never hunted but I want to try long range shooting. I was looking at 308 but I’ve been told to go with 7mm or 270. What should I get? I want to shoot out to 1000,1200 yards. I’m just having fun.

Iam much confortable with bigger caliber like 30.06 or 300win mag. The 308 is not a good caliber for elk exept if your are à very good shooter. Most of Hunter are not élite snipers so we should take bigger caliber for not injurie and lost this beautiful animal 🦌 .

Killed that elk as fast as the core lokts from my .270.

Really modern bullets have turned the old warhorse 308 and 30-06 into great elk sized cartridges even at distance

I didn't know the 308 could take down an animal that size. I have a 308 but I wasn't sure this caliber would be good to take down animals this big. Could it do the same thing with moose?

308 just kills about everything..as any other bullet does ..remember our ancestors use to kill them with arrows and spears lol

308s are like stock Ford F-150s, they just work, year after year. It's not perfect, but it can and has worked on any animal in North America.

Uh! .308 is a little light for an elk that size. But you made a well placed shot to make a clean kill. Shot placement is above caliber size for a clean kill but still I want all the bullet I can get without damaging to much meat.

How far was the shot? Are we seeing it drop or am I mistaken

I wouldn't say a good shot or a great shot. If it was it would have dropped where it was standing!

It was a Hammer Hunter. They leave crazy smoke trails from the machining oil in the tip. They shoot nice but they don't expand well. You can tell it didn't expand by the drastic change in direction as the bullet exited with an upward trajectory.
They still seem to kill elk just fine. I guess tumbling bullets are just as deadly.
