I appreciate Micks thoughts on the tube issue. Myself, I’ve been playing since the early 90s and never owned a tube amp. I’ve played through them and they’re great. I’m not an expert or anything, but I truly don’t have a problem with my Tone Master Deluxe Reverb blonde. I know I know, but if tubes truly do get scarce, lots of options exist. We can still play!

Out of curiosity, I went online after this episode to see if I went online just to check if any “Tubes” were available for purchase. Every where I checked; “sold out.” Leave it to “Fear” to bring out the “Hoarders!” Thinking of the film “Watchmen” for some reason right now

I've got myself a Jazzmaster with that same awful bridge, and as a heavy/high-gain guy I find I have to be very methodical about where I use it. Love the thing, but I have to restrict it to cleaner parts with a lighter touch as much as I can. As a slight tangent, I've got a squire tele with a maple board that I put a standard hardtail bridge on and switched the bridge pup for a humbucker and it is probably my favorite guitar ever. It's hot trash, but it's the most inspiring thing to play for me.

Hey guys, missed this as I was celebrating my own birthday. I found your channel a while ago and particularly enjoyed the show featuring Ed O'Brien and was wondering if you guys will ever do one with Jonny Buckland assuming he was up for it? I know Coldplay isn't necessarily known for crazy guitar solos but he's my favorite guitarist.

Agreed re Mark Knopfler - first guitarist I was actively listening to when I first got a guitar aged 13. I never realised it at the time but he is one of the biggest influences on me. When I got my Strat recently I found myself unconsciously noodling on things like Sultans of Swing.

Brothers in Arms was a DDD recoding, digital recording equipment, digital mastering, digital media. It was recorded at George Martins' AIR Studio in Monsserat on a Sony 24-track digital tape machine through a Neve 8078 board which was the last of the 80 series of hand wired analog mixing consoles designed and built by Neve. It was one of the first albums intentionally recorded as a full DDD for CD release.

Hi Dan and Mick!

Congrats on the goldtop, Mick! Regarding the differences between that guitar and Dan's '02(?) R8, that I believe you talked about in the last VCQ, it would be interesting to see if some small and easily reversible hardware changes to the R8 could make them closer (if that is something Dan is willing/would like to try -- perhaps it will result in some more treble and airiness ;-) ).

I suspect that the goldtop has steel bridge posts and steel thumbwheels under the wireless ABR-1, long (i.e., 1" threaded portion) steel tailpiece studs screwed into long (>=1") steel inserts, and a lightweight aluminium tailpiece. This may contribute slightly to its clear and airy voice. You could, for instance, check if the material is steel with a small magnet during the next string change.

On the other hand, I think Dan's R8 may have brass bridge posts with brass thumbwheels under a wired(?) ABR-1, shorter "historic length" (7/8" threaded portion) brass tailpiece studs screwed into shorter (7/8") steel inserts, and probably a lightweight aluminium tailpiece (I think those were introduced around 2001, so perhaps check the weight to see if it is around 30-35 grams). Again, this could be checked with a magnet to see if the components are nonmagnetic for brass. For example, trying out some steel 7/8" tailpiece studs may yield a small difference in the sound and is reversible. Similarly, steel thumbwheels may have a tiny impact and is also reversible. The posts, however, would require a bit more work to screw in and out.

Note that the vintage Les Pauls supposedly had brass bridge posts and brass thumbwheels, long steel tailpiece studs and aluminium tailpieces.

Keep on doing what you do!

Mick, Communique is one of my favorite albums. I believe it was recorded in Nassau Bahamas at Compass Point Studios and mixed at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. Mobile Fidelity's 45RPM Original Master Recording of Communique is an excellent pressing (If your turntable supports 45RPM). Congrats on the Gold Top LP, that's the best sounding LP I've ever heard. Playing it must be sublime.

Regardless of gear or current state of technology the quality of an audio recording is dependent upon the ear of the one in charge. That one may be the producer, the engineer, or the artist, or any combination which allows the quality to be maximized. Convenience must consciously be placed way down the priorities list.

Tube amps are not going away any time soon so dont worry about not getting tubes. All big amp manufacturers still get them. What your hearing about is them not being able to find suitable replacements for "lots or sets" of tubes they purchased already. They still get thousands of them all the time.

I got the humdinger and completed the wet dry setup this week. Was pleased that it didn’t require anything more than increasing the mix on the mods and delays to work. The movement in the air is quite the sensation. I can’t think of a way to do it, but any way to get my phaser which I run before my gain stages and the split to just go to the wet amp? The phaser sounds good wet in both, but I know it’d be even better wet/dry.

I had the original tubes in my 71 Marshall Superbass up until about 2008. I figure the replacements in it should last me until I'm too old to care anymore. I toured playing full-time throughout the late 80s, 90s & 2000s. The guys with an issue are gonna be the egotistical players that have to have new tubes every year because of "Tone". Just play & be the tone yourself & things will be fine. 😉👍

About the tube shortage, I'm super glad my amp of choice is a Crate BV300H, I never have to crank it, the headroom is basically ridiculous, I can't even crank it, anything past 6ish is hard to handle, and you lose the note clarity when your ears are bleeding out :P however, it's my favorite piece of gear, biggest part of my sound as far as i'm concerned, it's probably more important than my #1 guitar tbh, I do need to get a backup set or two, I'd cry and cry if I could never play it again, it is definitely an experience.
