Great song

I like it without the last verse... but i could understand how it was used in the video version for the fade away i guess.... awesome song none the less, and i'm not a huge fan but always play this in the set list at the bar.

There's a couple things about this demo that are too rough to release (particularly the quick fade), but I think I like this take better than the albumn version. There's a hypnotic feel to it.

Re: Northern Ireland. Based on the video release and comments, I think that wikipedia is right that Northern Ireland was on the band's mind when writing the lyrics. To me the invisible sun is sort of like a metaphor for how the sun powers the earth, and the invisible sun is what powers and sustains us to give us hope when it seems all reason to hope is lost. Sort of like the line in Two Towers, where Frodo asks Sam what are we fighting for..."that there is some good left in the world"....

@CaramelCamel Yes . . . with the line changed a bit . . . in My Fair Lady the line is "All I want is a room somewhere . . . " pretty much the same . . . The Police would be absolutely huge if they came out today . . . that is how far ahead of their time they were! Great music is timeless music!

In the video I remember seeing (and am here searching for) the 'My Fair Lady' words were sung as they were in the original play/movie, and added on way at the end, just before the video ended. I don't know if that version is on any of the DVD 'singles' videos,but it would be worth the price.One of my favorite songs of theirs. I remember being so surprised hearing those lyrics, and telling my friends where they were from.They told me I was crazy, so I had to sit them down to watch the movie, LOL

Sting's biography emphasizes that the clean sound of a trio could trounce the muddled noise of a quartet. This version supports this.

Sting is British Seanbanog4. He is from the North East of England (Newcastle) he studied at the University there to become a teacher, though I don't know if he ever really taught or only went to university before starting to sing with Police.

I've been listening to these Police demos for the last couple of days and realize that by the time Sting gave these songs to the band they were already fleshed out and standing on their own with no spaces for Stewart and Andy to contribute.  The real work in a band is the song crafting and Sting did it.  I'm impressed because I did not think that was their process.  Sting deserved his accolades.

I mean in all essence it's essentially the same song... his demos are amazing. Funny you have the two best players as band members...then again he was the songwriter they are amazing artists but not pop writers like Sting.

I wish they would reunite for at least one last tour..

that background synth they're using mixed with the slight flutter of the degraded sound really makes it hauntingly pretty to listen to <3
