White Hack is a great tip! I really need to take a look in case I want to go back to tinkering. I have favored the OSR last few years. I also need to give HarnMaster a real chance! Thanks for the encouragement! I've been slowly collecting a pdf library of HarnWorld and it would be super cool to run it with the real deal 😁

Oh, I loved playing in 3e/3.5e/PF1! But it killed my DMing. For the reasons you point to. It also turned a bit frustrating as a player after some years into it. Many character build ideas just don't work in practise and you never really got into those cool prestige classes. 5e improved upon those shortcomings immensely but of course has its own baggage.
