Well, php syntax doesn't seem too bad now after I had to deal with EJS the last few months.

Those guys that hate PHP and warn you it is a dead language are so funny. If you are a PHP expert and you can't make money with that, then you are free to complain about it. So many times programmers believed in a future of programming that was proved wrong. So let the future to take care about itself. Now you have PHP code to write.

Using PHP for all my website's for the past 8 years. ❤

Though please be aware, modern PHP is very heavily typed. Variables are not typed, but object properties, function parameters, and function returns have a very robust type system to support them. They're all technically optional, but nearly all professional code these days is fairly heavily typed. It's also impressively fast for a nominally interpreted language. (It's actually compiled to bytecode first, then that's cached and executed.)

We also basically never mix HTML and PHP in one file anymore. 🙂

As great (or bad) as PHP is, it still suffers from jankiness which it was criticized for back in the day. I will never use the language without using laravel too however. I've enjoyed using the language in a laravel project and while I've never hit the limit on the performance of PHP the language also doesn't incentivize to write certain code properly. I've worked in a project that would've got anyone kicked out of a company but, just because the original author was the only backend developer at the company, I've seen abhorrent functions for something that was quite important. This is not to say this cannot happen in any language, I'm not trying to make it sound that way but I've experienced this more with PHP than other "better" languages.

Been using PHP for over 20 years (god I'm old), starting with cheesy 90's gaming clan websites, through to having a career as a developer. The language has evolved tremendously in that time. It's a shame it has trouble shaking its reputation from the early days, because it's not deserved at all.

PHP deserves more love. It's great how simple it is to use and how flexible it can be.

You can ignore all programming languages in web, but you can't ignore PHP...

Saying PHP is popular to build backend is a bit misleading. It's a popular language because it is used by Wordpress, and Wordpress is the easiest way to get started when deploying a small dynamic website, or webshop. However, no one in their sane mind would employ PHP in a modern backend application. All backends being used nowadays use PHP for legacy reasons, and most of them want to get out of it as soon as possible.

PHP was the first scripting language I learned and built some shitty ass websites with it
