they are making bikes much more expensive than it needs to be
ОтветитьI went to my local shop the other day to support....welp they dont even sell carbon brake pads anymore😧
ОтветитьCycling computers are ridiculous price wise for things that look like a cheap phone from 2005.
ОтветитьI'd like a new race bike but I live on the Texas Gulf Coast, where there is not a natural hill for over a 100 miles, so I don't need or want disc brakes. So it's probably 2nd hand for me.
ОтветитьDurianrider is Right IYKYK
ОтветитьNice one, I still prefer my mechanical group and my old Cervelo, but the soloist and the Caledonia don’t look all that bad
ОтветитьDurianrider is right on every point.
ОтветитьI always check in on Harley and listen to his content. Perhaps not as much as I did, but I’m certainly still a fan. I love his passion and perspectives on the cycling market. I think for a lot of new people to the sport, they might not understand him simply because they don’t appreciate how it used to be 15 to 20 years ago for high end bikes. Either they recall a low end bike they had as kid, or a new bike that now costs $4K+ and needs to be justified. I love light light fast bikes. But I’m 55 and have other interests, so I’m not dropping $4K+ on a bike. But I’ll gladly spend 500 to 1000, build a 6.x Kg 5900 with a 7800 group and be very satisfied. I just think that opportunity will be gone for the 20 to 30 year olds of today, when they get to 55. Currently I ride a Felt Z5, 8050 Di2 and Easton SLXs. I LOVE that bike. Dura Ace 9000s rim brakes with SwissStop pads are not a problem in the wet. It’s not the new tech that’s the problem, it’s the “marginal gains” being implemented for profits in an ever increasing race to nowhere.
ОтветитьI don't have the latest iphone, and I don't have the latest bike. And yet...my 10yo TCR SL I picked up for AU$1200 with DuraAce (not that I need that) is better than a 10k current bike imho. But I appreciate it took someone spending 7k and not riding it much for me to basically get a top end brand new bike for shits and giggles. I think current bike prices are hilarious and anyone that can't really faford them buying them to be better/faster is stupid. But...if you can afford them go for it. Like anything, there's a price to keep up with the Jonses. Even if you don't need it or it's not any better.
ОтветитьThe thing a lot of people who complain about how the bike companies treat consumers are missing the obvious point: we aren’t their audience. They’re selling 16k bikes to people who buy a new one every year, take them round Richmond Park on Sunday in summer and throw them out. That’s fine, it’s their business, their audience. What we do have to complain about is the fact there is no alternative.
ОтветитьThe way I ride and where I ride makes disc brakes really applicable but I don’t understand why someone from the Netherlands or a crit rider would need them. Give options!
ОтветитьTell me one time you go on a group ride, you didn't hear brake rub.
ОтветитьAll I know is a bicycle or a bike you called it, should not be more expensive than a brand new Kawasaki Ninja
ОтветитьI bought my bike to last me 10 years, not 3. Rim breaks are easy maintenance, light weight, and good enough. I don't cycle much in the rain. I like working on my own bike, because I like knowing my own bike. And I don't like spending money when I don't have to. I am a casual rider. I ride for the fun and adventure.
Ответитьit must irk Durianrider that you get 38k views off the back of doing a reaction video
ОтветитьI love rim brakes, however having gotten carbon wheels with carbon pads the bike is fucking terrifying in comparison to my alloy rims.
Would make me consider disc if i was going for carbon rims again.
But still rim brake for maintenance and quick fixes i just love same with mechanical shitfters, for me its the beauty of the bike easily to maintain grow with the bike over time
It’s called W D 40 boys use that under you arm
That’s the cyclist deodorant
Regarding rim vs disc brakes - it's not collusion, it's what people are buying. If rim brake bikes were still in high demand, they would be getting sold. Yeah there's a lot of marketing impetus behind it, but that by itself isn't doing it all
ОтветитьMan I'm glad you brought up this cringe AF instagram stuff.
Can we also issue a fatwah on on-ride selfies too. PLEASE!
My 2010 TCR has the overdrive sized steer tube too... I admit that proprietary stuff is more common today, but even my 2010 had that tech already.
ОтветитьI saw a disc brake bike yesterday: it was a 60yr old lady and the bike was a "shopper" type with step over frame and wicker basket on the front.
I did have a chuckle.
Discs are fine for buckled rims, less mess from brake dust and rain flick from rims, but they really are only performance improving for the harshest of downhills (road and off road.)
For most bikes its a gimmick plus what the manufacturer is set up to produce.
Have you seen Dylan Johnson's gravel bike? Very small frame.
ОтветитьAs far as bikes not aging well. the dropped seat stays have been around for almost a decade now and I still think they look awful on every bike.
ОтветитьMy bike cologne is Simple Green
ОтветитьThe Garmins!!! That is another example of cycling reaching it's max selling potential! Garmin 840, not many useful upgrades for the upgraded price. New bikes, not much gain for the average guy for the increased prices!!! The cycling industry needs more money.
ОтветитьA big point on the NEW more expensive bikes/technology is that the price is prohibitive for many of the weekend warriors getting into the hobby. I had sold all my bikes when I had back surgery and now being 50 lbs overweight and wanting to get back into the game it is just really expensive! I bought a new-used 2021 Trek Domane SL7 and it is a good bike but I don't think it rides as good as my 2011 Giant TCR Advanced SL. I am trying to get my hands on an older vintage bike to really compare. To me all the "new" technology is just to make money for the companies because who wants to buy what they already have. People want all the new cutting edge stuff that really isn't much better than what was out in 2015 especially for the average Joe rider.
ОтветитьCycling is also becoming inaccessible. The cost of a good entry to mid level road bike is ridiculous.
ОтветитьI've put in some of my best times trying to pass and get away from people wearing cologne or scented deodorant (or even too much fabric softener) while riding.
ОтветитьDurian rider is a very smart and insightful person, but he doesn't help himself with some of the stupid things he sometimes says and does.
ОтветитьThe GOOD news is the china is coming alive with their own frames and mech. There are going to be more options from companies where half the cost of the bike is NOT for advertising BS
ОтветитьDurianrider is spot on. The bike industry has lost touch with people and is pursuing pure profit. I am buying all the mechanical parts and frames I can with rim brakes....
ОтветитьJust another opinion peddler. No tests, no deep knowledge, often times even no actual product in hand. Add a troll-like presentation and you'll get what he gets.
Ответить"Pick me" channel 😅
ОтветитьI'm a small-medium sized rider and even I prefer a wider tire. I use 28/30mm TL. I even wonder if I should go 30/32mm sometimes... 😃
ОтветитьHarley is selling shit the same as everyone else. His secondhand bikes his diet everything he does is about selling shit
ОтветитьI don’t put on deodorant before a ride but I do shower in my kit right after. That way it doesn’t stink in the laundry basket before I can give it a proper wash.
Ответитьwhat ever happened to ash beech
ОтветитьI can’t even watch the big tour races I loved for 35 years anymore because of the bikes….
ОтветитьThe truth is in your face: put those new bikes on a scale and see how heavy they are.
ОтветитьActually for the hills and bad weather I recommend to stay away from discs. They fail instantly and catastrophically contrary to clinchers. In wet and muddy conditions the break pads can be gone very very quickly. And they don't break better at all.
ОтветитьLove Durian rider one take videos sometimes weird most of the time very relatable subjects
ОтветитьLong live rim brakes! Why are cyclist buying today's heavy garbage bikes?
I am not a pro, but I love aero carbon bikes. I just want a bike that I love and is fun to ride. That is why I buy rim brake mechanical shifiting bikes. The last of the dinosaurs! I would never buy a bike that I have to plug up or download bluetooth to ride.
Excellent and fair discussion on Durianrider.
ОтветитьHis name is Harley, that should summarize everything there is to know about the guy.
ОтветитьCorrect me if I’m wrong, but the crux of the argument is that modern bikes are more expensive (true), harder to work on (true), and slower (arguably true, but mostly they aren’t lighter). So WHY? Fill in the blanks, disc brakes make me faster on my race bike because ______.
ОтветитьNot a retro-grouch or a luddite. Some of my bikes have dropper posts, hydraulic brakes and tubeless tires--those would be my MTB's. What I find is that as modern bike tech increasingly chases marginal gains the appeal also becomes marginal. Diminishing or negligible returns aren't as compelling to recreational or utility riders. My favourite road bikes--non racer here--are decades old steel with rim brakes, purely mechanical transmissions and clinchers with tpu tubes. Yup, I've ridden modern road bikes. Nope, I don't feel compelled to switch.
ОтветитьI know Torque Peak and I love his insights and methods. But when I stumbled upon DurianRider I wasn't sure what to expect and think. But after a few videos and self-reflection on what he said I think DurianRider more than often is spot on with common sense and what I describe as healthy gut feeling. He says what I think as well and don't dare to say. Same with Hambini: This bloke pours out insults and injury to bike companies and he is spot on about the crap that we are supposed to buy for a huge load of money. As a reference I watch channels like GCN, which I love but pretty often realize that their presenters are careful with wording and test results in order not to damage their relationships with their sponsors (the situation of an influencer or employee). 🤨🤔
ОтветитьI have been a bike messenger for 4 yrs, I ride bikes from the early to late 80s every day. The maintenance it takes for them to ride another 6-12 months without service is far, far cheaper than any modern bike would cost. I ride for at least 4-5 hours daily. All weather, including a foot of snow.
