Everyone uses Linux. It runs the world's servers and both major phone OSes are based on it.

I am on Linux since 1996 and never understood why people use an OS that is inferior in every way. But it is fine with me. As soon as the masses adopt it, it will be watered down.

Very easy answer. People WILL NOT spend their time fixing their operating system.
If you are not into tech, there is no way to use linux if something does not work and that will happen alot. For example countless times path variable is not set.
Installing apps that are not from repo is super confusing with long commands.
People just dont care about that

Most people are not developers and do not want to use the terminal.
The other issue is lack of consistancy and a plain user interface looking like it is 2010 or something

Most people HATE computers. At best, they look at computers as tools to do stuff. Same thing for cars. Same thing for any machine. If it's possible to just push a big green button "do the stuff" or speak to an AI assistant "Jarvis, do the stuff", most people will be happy and content, with ABSOLUTELY NO desire to know the cogs and wheels of the technology. We geeks are a minority. Accept it, embrace it, take pride in it.

Howdy Michael, are you on GNOME currently? About to decide on my future DE - I like the simplistic approach of GNOME, but the lack of proper fractional scaling would be a no go for me. I need it ... ^^

I been trying to get on Linux. Stupid things like adding my 2nd hard drive, what a pain. Still can't run Paramount+, they just plain block me. Setting up RGB lights, still not well supported. Blue Ray, can't help ya. so I have to dule boot. I had to load VLC, why are more things not done with flat packs?

Why no one uses linux? Easy answer, play any of your vids to a 6 year old, because that's the knowledge level of the general populus. Now ask, why would anyone use Linux ? Best answer available ... to avoid updates ! Updates are, have been & always will be the bane of computer existence. Example: I'm trying to setup a 3D printer (insert any printer, paper or plastic, here). Start computer, design, slice to usb, thumbdrive to printer and print. Simple enough. It works and will continue to work when seperated from internet of things. Simply put, I want a system, which will work to the timeframe it was built, until the components wear out and parts are no longer available. And, not connected to the internet, thus avoiding planned obsolesence.

Presently, I'm trying to utilize linux for fdm 3D printing. So, following a popular CAD developer yt channel's mention of his Ubuntu usage. So, I dive in ... latest Ubuntu 24.04 ... check ... install developer's CAD ... check ... install "best" slicer ... error. Ubuntu 24.04 changed from previous versions which ran the latest Orca slicer, so, today, their not compatible. At least, not compatible with one single linux fork ... Ubuntu 24.04, inless having developer level knowledge of linux. What are the odds ? Literally, the time frame of today's not compatible. Probably compatible with the earlier ubuntu version and probably be compatible in the future. Now, my choices are uninstalling all & rebuilding with (unknown to me) previous versions, or waiting an unknown amount of time for someone to create a solution simple enough for a neophyte (me) to do. I shouldn't need to dust off my limited 1990's programming skills, but that seems to be the direction things are going.

A big hurdle to Linux adoption is the lack of integrated cloud services; there's nothing that competes with Microsoft's 365 suite. Office365/Teams/SharePoint are definitely frustrating to use at times, but there's nothing in the Linux world that even remotely competes with them. Corporate IT decisions are based on money, not ideology. My organization has actually saved money by moving our email from on-premises Exchange servers to Exchange365, and giving every employee a OneDrive instead of their own personal folder on the departmental share drives that live on the Windows servers in our datacenters. Linux alternatives to these things either don't exist or are more difficult and costly to set up and support.

I sometimes think people dont use Linux because people make it look so complicated. Personally I'm a Windows user and sometimes i would like to try Linux but it simply looks so complicated to be a OS. Like in windows you can just click or search your programs to open them, or edit a lot of features just with clicks. The difference is in Linux i usually see everyone uses the terminal and types so much commands that look like totally unknown language, I think maybe Linux should start being more easy to access, I know the video says it but still i think Linux hasn't reached the Windows "easy way to use"

MicroSoft has been operating a deliberate policy of shutting out or shutting down any competing OS or software that it can. The only survivor is Apple, and that is due to there being an uncomfortable truce, since Apple positions its products in a different market to MS. Google have made a valiant attempt with the Chromebook, but that also does not have much traction, even with the massive take-up of Android on mobiles and tablets. Windows is bundled with third-party PC hardware with huge discounts on the OS price (I still, to this day, do not know how MS get away with that anti-competitive behaviour) and the Windows APIs are not all documented (or well documented) so s/w vendors not "in the MS club" find it really difficult to provide products on Windows which makes them also struggle to provide them native on Linux, if they want to sell to a large market. MS also dissuades vendors from providing native Linux versions (especially for drivers) so device support (like laser printers) on non-MS platforms are flaky and feature-deficient. MS products (like Word, Excel, PowerPoint) do not default to saving files in open formats (even though they exist for all three types - I know that can be turned on, but what percentage of MS users also know that?) and they deliberately "can't handle" open formats properly so interchange with non-MS products is painful.

Learning curve to actually do specific job(audio in my case) is time consuming.
Not all of specific programs are there, which privately for me also means not all gear that I use will work in designed way.
Overall setting up Linux is fun and headache at the same time.
It is cool OS, and I’m really like it, but, at least, for any kind of graphic/3d/audio/photo purpose it’s too much hassle and sacrifice.

Valve. If they can sell more Steam Decks, more people will be using Linux for gaming (and they wont even know), that will get more games to be more compatible to Linux. This is the only viable way for Linux adoption. Linux is just an OS that isnt in the spotlight, not the corporate standard, not the PC standard even, reasonably complex which is, sadly, enough to send normal people running and screaming back to Windows and macOS.

the primary targets for consumers. There are too many distros and this is confusing for consumers buying PCs.

When I recently left windows, I landed on Debian 12. I was getting along just find until I bought my wife a M2 Macbook air. She didn't like it, and wanted a ipad instead. I made the mistake of playing around with it while her ipad was being shipped. She has her Ipad now and I have left both windows and linux behind for MacOs. This 15 inch M2 macbook air is beyond amazing. Everything just works and barely takes any effort to configure something. Installing software is literally just dragging a file into a folder and Bob's your uncle. No operating system is perfect, with that said, MacOs is my jam for the foreseeable future.

Linux is great nowadays. A lot more stable, efficient, customizable,... than windows... but, IMHO, the main reason there is no mass adoption is the fact the are only a few little adoption in the enterprise as workstation (not talking about servers). and the main reason for me is the lack of the most known and most used software: microsoft's (office, teams,...).
I know (1) there are alternatives (Libreoffice, ...) and (2) they exist as PWA... but when you are in enterprise it is not enough, pwa version are lacking a lot of features (no give/take control on screen sharing, office 365 may be good enough to open a document but for edition of complex ones, it is un-usable...
Wine doesn't work with office 365, letting a vm open for office is not a real solution...
in all case, it is not a technical issue but a commercial one... there is nothing that prevent Microsoft to make a Linux version of these software (there was even an official version of teams 1.0 for linux until Microsoft announced that they stop it)... maybe a trial may force them to change their mind ?!
for now, at my work, we may move from windows to Mac after a POC with fedora as it may be the best compromise (ms software are present on Mac, and even if it is not Linux, as a posix system inheriting a good BSD base, it is the nearest of the both world...

I had dual boot going on for years telling myself I would check out Linux eventually. One day as I was on my Linux distro I happen to notice that my network connection wasn't sending any data. I mean 0k going in either direction. I was impressed. Here was a machine that only did what I wanted it to WHEN I WANTED TO DO IT. Turning on windows and it's constantly talking to God only knows who, telling them God knows what. I was sold! I ripped off that band-aid by starting off with Kali Linux and well I've never looked back. I now go on Windows maybe once a week maybe to update it so that the next time I need to use it I don't have to wait half an hour for it finish telling all the pervs (Microsoft, NSA, etc) what I've been doing. Linux may seem so distant because of the complexity of it, but take it from me you'll be too busy reading tutorial after tutorial learning commands to notice how fast you're learning it. Just between you, me and the rest of the world, I get a little thrill each time I press enter after entering a command and see my terminal light up. 😄

You can do pretty much anything you'd do on windows using a GUI, in a linux GUI too, like changing settings, wallpapers, etc...

Its just Linux offers much more advanced system level stuff that can only easily be done in the terminal. Plus when you learn it, even doing something as simple as copying a file is easier and faster on a terminal... A GUI is just unnecessary sometimes 🤷

One thing I especially agree with is one of the very last points, exemplified by the grandpa scenario presented here. Many people who use their computers for simple tasks such as reading a blog article or watch videos are one of the largest groups of computer users. Linux nowadays isn't entirely based on complex configuration or command lines. With the help of the software is uses, it is capable of providing basic needs. One such example of software that aids in this is Flatpak, one of the most universal packaging formats. Many major applications have been ported to it, including Chrome, Discord, you name it. Along with this, Flatpak has store frontend applications built right into most desktop environments or on their own, and many applications using Flatpak are in a GUI. It is singlehandedly THE universal app store of Linux at this very moment, making it even easier to get applications you need. Of course, alternatives exist like Snap, but generally Flatpak is more often used. It has presented many bricks to add to the bridge, because as stated earlier, many computer users simply use their computers for conventional tasks. Flatpak aids in helping these users because of its many frontends in the form of stores, making the bridge even easier.

The only thing stopping me from deleting my Windows partition are 2 programs: Roblox and my video editor, VSDC. Although Roblox has had patches before that worked on Linux, afaik Roblox broke those Wine patches due to their anti-cheating system. And VSDC i've gotten too used to, it's jarring to see other video editors. Tried running it on Wine and it didn't really work, in fact it crashed once

Personally I think the Steam Deck and Steam OS has been the best advertisements for Linux. Compatibility has been great and installing Windows applications that are not from the Steam Library is relatively easy.
It is likely that Steam OS 3.0 will be given a wider release next year and I can see it becoming the operating system of choice for PC gamers.
