I'm new to your site. Thanks for the video. I have a question. Does this copy over registry files an license keys. I have very important program that I use to make id cards for our club. I can't afford to mess this up!🤣 Thank you and I look forward to seeing your past and present videos

Going to try this in 2023 from an old Win 7 Pro(that I absolutely love) to a new Win 11(Ugh). I want my Office 2007 version that does not in any way have to connect to the internet or give me permission to use my own software. I was able to just copy it before but now it's near impossible. My issue with the new laptop is there is no CD/DVD Drive so that I can use my original CD's. I do have an external hard drive, so cross my fingers and hope for the best. I also have been looking for days for a solution. How ridiculous is planned obsolescence; infuriating...........

Loved this video, I watched it until the end for the entertainment value...and laughed through much of it...even though I was pretty sure it would not help me with my computer problems. And I subscribed. Copying files from an old computer to a new computer is no big deal, there are several ways to do it. The issue is getting old legacy programs installed on a new version of Windows. Copying program files doesn't install them. I am still not sure how you were able to get your programs to work on Win10 just by copying them over from your external backup drive. Sounds like a miracle to me. Four years later from when you made this video, I am trying to migrate programs from an old PC running Win10 to a new PC running Win11. I tried cloning my old HDD onto a new SSD to use as a boot drive in the new PC, but this doesn't work. But I do have all my old files in my new PC now from doing this. Microsoft makes it impossible to transfer installed programs from an old PC on an older OS system onto a new PC running a newer OS. This is intentional, it is called forced obsolescence...to force you to buy new subscriptions to all the programs you already paid for once. It is frustrating, to say the least.

Thank you so, so, so much! I am beyond frustrated with trying to transfer my programs to my new laptop and you are the only resource I've found that may actually help me get the job done. I've been months searching for help, then having to walk away for my sanity - a week later, I'd try again - over and over. And not only did you give me information, but explained it in a normal, conversational way that I could effortlessly understand. Thank you again for your excellent video and taking the time to help out all of us who rely on a computer but don't work in IT. I can't tell you what a relief it is.

I had Photoshop 6.0 on a laptop, so I just went into my C:program files (x86) and right clicked on Photoshop 6.0 to copy it. I had my Passport (flash drive) inserted in a USB port. I then went to it...right clicked to paste...and pasted it from the Passport into my Dell Desktop C: Program Files (x86) and I now enjoy Photoshop 6.0 in Windows 10! July 19, 2023

you might of been lucky to copy the files across and it just worked on very basic programs, but there are loads of registry entries made when installing programs and without them most applications will not work, this was 20 minutes of my time wasted

I followed your transfer directions on my new Windows 11 but got this message. YOU'LL NEED TO PROVIDE ADMINISTRATOR PERMISSION TO COPY TO THIS FOLDER (PROGRAM FILES (F86) ???????

Your video is entertaining and helpful, BUT . . . I followed your directions using Windows 11, I wasn’t able to get both screens to show. However, I did a workaround and had to drop the new program into the C Drive and then once in the C Drive on my new computer, I was able to drag it into program files x86. Sadly though, when I tried to open the program, (and I had to do it as Administrator) a DLL is missing message shows. The program is Greeting Card Factory Deluxe version 10 by Nova Development which I paid for as a download several years ago. It is a single user program. Could that be what is not allowing me to be successful? How can I fix this? Thanks.

I'm finally moving from win 7 PC to a HP i5 17.3 laptop with Win 11 installed. Like you, I loved win 7 but I'm slowly coming to terms with the new Win 11 layout. Anyway, a few years ago I moved from Photoshop CC to Elements 10 because I started to use Capture One pro for most of my processing and only needed the Photoshop aspect to run my Google free version of Nik software, plus I like the dodge and burn tool in Photoshop anyway. I don't want to pay a fortune for the latest NIK software, but will upgrade to PS Elements 22. So I was wondering if I could save the NIK Plugin folder (currently in its old place "program Data folder) to my own external drive, and save it again to the new plugin folder in Elements 22, (as Adobe now requests)? I will certainly give it a try. I have also saved the original exe. file, so if first I don't succeed I will try to do a fresh install with that. Fingers crossed.

As a retired Sr. Software Engineer who’s designed Microsoft Windows programs since Windows Version 2.0, I can assure everyone watching this video that this technique will only work for programs that install ALL their components in the application subdirectory in the Programs directory, and don’t rely on any Registry Keys, COM DLL’s, or Services that get installed with the software. There are many programs that fall into this category, however, in today’s world of software, most programs are written that use Registered DLL’s that get installed in a Windows System directory. If these aren’t copied or copied and not registered, the program can’t work. It certainly doesn’t hurt to try, but don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work.

Thanks for your informative video. I tried the method yesterday from my 10+ yr old Dell Dimension and also from a 5 yr old Lenovo laptop to a new Dell desktop, using a new sea gate usb drive. I was trying to move Microsoft office 16, but it did not work on the new Dell. Files transferred fine but I can’t start the software on my new computer. 😢 I am left to continue searching for my actual purchased discs; I have them somewhere and hopefully they’ll still work.

I just had to wipe my Windows 10 due to a malware scam on June 12, 2022...! So, I did. I then loaded a new Windows 10 and copied all of my old Windows 10 Programs onto my Passport before wiping the slate clean. I reloaded all of my old programs and they all work fine, so this system still works well. John Tyler

I want to use my old Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 on my new Windows 10 computer but it says that it has exceeded the amount of times it can be installed. I just installed it on another computer which died which apparently was the last opportunity for installing. Now on my new computer I'm told the installation limit has been reached. I have the original disk with its key for the software. It installs but then starts to count down the number of times it can be opened before certain features will no longer work. It's literally driving me crazy. What can I do? Cheers!

I am confused. My understanding of the installation process for a program is that (in general) it involves MANY files in addition to the main executable file you are copying to the new PC. These other files include DLL, authentication, and potentially many other files. In addition, in many cases there are registry entries that are also required. All this must be in place in order for the transported .exe program to work, yet you seem to have had sucess with just moving over the .exe file.

Can you explain why you are sucessful when a review of the factors involved would seem to indicate there is no way your simplistic approach can work?
