Had Gorbachev risen no further than a middle level provincial Communist Party functionary he would have lived a blameless life, the Soviet Union would still exist, and there would not be a war in Ukraine. However, according to party workers who knew him in Stavropol he was out of his depth as a first secretary, and thus had to delegate his duties to his subordinates. As a member of the Central Committee and Politburo he was part of a team, which limited the amount of damage that he could do, but once he became the all powerful General Secretary all constraints were removed from him. In this position he had total control over every aspect of the economy, society, and the military thus allowing him to wreck the Soviet system and bring the Soviet Union to it's knees.

The irony on all these was that the hardliners on the Duma where the one's who pave the way for the final demise of the USSR. Maybe if the changes where made by Brezhnev the USSR will still alive. But he's legacy still alive as Glasnot and Perestroika are the core of Putin government. In that sense the changes overcome he's time. RIP.

I know the USSR did a lot of bad things, but, I feel like this was the best Soviet leader, as he was the first one to think about dissolving the empire, thinking about Democracy, independency, so it’s very sad to me that he has passed now.

Gorbachev was the successor to Breshnev, Kosygin, Suslov and Suslov. Who really had power in the USSR in 1964-1982 is not entirely clear. But neverless throughout his term as the General Secretary of the USSR from 1985-91, Michael sat daily in inner counsels and cabinets of Generals, Intelligence chiefs and 'politicians' who were politicians only in the sense that Kattlebrunner, Muller, Goring, Speer, Goring and Borman were politicians. I doubt if these inner counsels were ever in Gorbachev's time more civilized than in the days, Stalin often, introduced Kruschev as his court clown and thug and openly described him as an imbecile. Which was Stalin's general view of his satellite administrators Honecker and Kim Sung. Stalin introduced his KGB boss Georgia Beira at dinners as his personal Himmler and Heydrich. Beira succeeded Stalin for 100 days. He announced wide ranging reforms and revelations of Stalin's attrocities. Beira was arrested by Eisenhower's 'friend' General Zurkov. Kruschev and the Portibulo ruled on immediate execution by firing squad Gorbachev was no more generous in the 1980s to Russians who had been passing information to the US Intelligence. They got a bullet in the back of the head, immediately, when arrested.. Throughout his 6 year tenure Gorbachev continued to bankrupt Russia developing a complete reequipment of the Soviet military with Akula, Sierra, Delta, submarines new Migs and Sukhois, Backfire and Blackjacks. Within two weeks of announcing the first huge cuts to the defence budget, halving it, to the Portbulo in 1991, Gorbachev faced a military coup. His last remark was he defended the Soviet Union to the last bullet, he was an unreformed communist, and had no other intention. Had he expressed any other view in the inner counsels of the USSR he would not have lived a day and would have been eliminated, faster than Hitler or Heydrich would have, without bothering with imprisonment or a People's Court trial.

The greatest Russian there ever was. He acknowledged that his county simply cannot keep pouring funds into the arms race anymore, was willing to make peace, let the Eastern European countries decide for their own future. Mikhail Gorbachev was a good man, he was a proponent of democracy and freedom, RIP Mr. Gorbachev.
