Canon R1X: The Next Game Changer?

It kinda makes sense in a way . Back in the day Canon would release a 1d ( sports camera) and a 1ds ( studio) camera . Soooo it is possible?

Translation: PLEASE, PLEEEEEEEEEEASE DON'T LEAVE CANON FOR ANOTHER MANUFACTURER! Sure, Nikon makes more and better bird cameras and lenses. Sure, both Nikon and Sony make multiple TRUE high-res flagship cameras -- and have for three years now. PLEASE BELIEVE THERE'S SOMETHING BETTER COMING FROM CANON!!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE!! (Sorry. I'm not buying it. If they could do it, they would have done it. The "Master of Everything" ship has sailed . . . and sunk.)

Well there are R1 and R5mk2 here at the Olympics. It's hot here but oddly it's less humid that back home in Canada Cameras running cooler here in Paris. If that's enough environmental proof for you. Yeah the R5mk2 is better overall than the R1 except in the really quick action. However for most of the Olympics the R5mk2 is perfectly adequate. The R1 does capture the javelin and the other "thrown" objects better. Granted they are traveling much quicker than any human could. I tried the lowest exposure time setting and it's nice. No rolling shutter. A bit touchy on the EV levels but manageable. Can't say much else about them. They fit well in hand and ibis is good enough but it's very lens dependent (so far)

I’ll tell you what would be a revolution as big as 5Dm4 to mirrorless, it would be the ability to custom order your features. It would be hands-down, the biggest money making camera industry in the world. They’d just have to have a universal housing body or two models to choose from. The rest would be totally automated the way you order a car.

I see we've all moved on from the R5 II and the R1. On to the next camera. The idea of a higher resolution R1 is very appealing to me. I photograph birds. I often crop. Here's the thing, we all drive ourselves crazy with megapixels. Weren't we all happy back in the day? You mentioned how 11.1 mp was amazing. I do wonder if rumors of an R1X or R1S will have certain photographers hesitating over purchasing the R1. Canon must really hate these rumors. My thoughts at the moment are hoping that I receive the R5 II next month. Thanks for this news, Simon!

As far as flagship is concerned, this R1 should just have had another name or, R3.2.

Hi Simon, I just did a night time video using the Nikon Zfc DX (APSC) using an adapter K&F Concepts M42 to Nikon Z Mount and was amazed at the quality of a lens that was made in 1978. Yes there was noise but the photos were excellent. It amazes me that people are always complaining that they want the best stuff at the cheapest price. I do not listen to the Naysayers. Nikon Z6III 1-1.5 Stops less of Dynamic Range or the Canon R1 not a Flagship Camera because of lower megapixel count, etc. I tend to buy gear that I am interested in using and have fun. So My Nikon 1 (J5 & V3) can do about 10 minutes of 1080p 60 recorded video, which doesn't stop me from using a Dummy Battery, Power Bank and plenty of SD storage space to make things work for me. Less time to worry about things just to get the right shot. If you minus one flaw but have plenty of extra features that the gear can do that is not a problem for me. I find a workaround and Enjoy the experience more. Cheers!

Bonkers just bonkers, so it’s a double self own. Because they’re going to seriously piss off customers who’ve preordered and purchased the £6999 R1 only to find out a better camera is coming out soon. Two the R1 costs £7000 so it’s logical to assume this R1X will be what £9999!. So good luck canon selling a £10k camera. Hardly anyone apart from the 1% of professionals have been willing to preorder the R1 for £6999 so good luck charging upwards of £10k for a R1X!. Logically it has to be £10k to fit in above the R1. As if those specs are the actual specs it’s significantly more powerful than the already unbelievably expensive R1. Bonkers.

Canon simply cannot be trusted with making cutting edge CMOS, they are simply not up to the task.
If they can beat the 3 year old z9 sensor with the R5ii sensor, they can't do jackshit

Canon uses the same strategy that politicians use to keep their flocks believing in their promises that never come true... But the flock still believing.

It's going to be several years before Canon releases a Higher MP count R1. So the next Game Changer will be a low MP Count global shutter in the R3. The next game Changer will be a Fully stacked Sensor in the R7ii.

I am so sick of all the speculation. The R1 has been a huge disappointment to all of us who have been patiently waiting more four years for a real Canon R1.

Wow this makes me mad! Basically Canon is undermining the supposed flagship by saying, don't worry guys, after you wait until Christmas for the R1 and spend $6300 we have something even better coming in the next year! 😒 This is even worse than DJI and their constant updated drone releases

Hi Simon. I love Canon and have shot with them for years. Sadly it’s time to part. My demanding job has taken me to Sony reluctantly. I do feel Canon have not come out with any better than what Sony and Nikon have out there already and they have had their models out for a while now. I think Canon are now seriously playing catch up with flagships.

I’ve still got my 1ds…at the time after just getting out of film …it was mind blowing…still takes great shots with low iso….if you’re right here Simon this is my dream camera …still got r5mkii on order tho …thx for sharing

I have pointed this out many times. The 1 series historically consists of TWO different bodies. Two sensor sizes. So i wouldn't be surprised at all if Canon releases another R1Whatever with a larger sensor.

Honestly this does sound like a dream camera body, however it's more like a wishlist rumour... But surely want one to get real.. and yeah agree that the current R1 sounds more like R3 mark ii, and released in a hurry just to launch it before the Olympics so that they don't disappoint sports photographers..

So we had years of waffle about R1 and R5 MkII and before they are even out we are now moving to R1X or R3 MkII. It’s getting frankly ridiculous. You’re going to lose subscribers if you continue down this road Simon, it’s getting boring. You could offer so much more by providing jargon busting information about video recording. Have the occasional tittle tattle by all means but it’s all getting really daft.

Hmm Simon, I'd even "compromise" on the megapickles when they'd put the exact Red V Raptor sensor in a R1 body .. if only the Big Three Japanese respected their company colors, with Nikon acquiring Yellow and Canon acquiring Red, leaving Sony to play with Orange 😛

Throwing out new rumors even before the R1 and R5II is available to the general public is testament of the market's overall disappointment of these new cameras. The R1 is essentially an upgraded R3 and the R5 II is an incremental upgrade to the R5. The "wow" is not there and Canon missed its mark. For me, I would think Canon would come out with and R1 with a global shutter and perhaps 33-45 mp. I still believe there's room for a R5IIs having 61-80 mp and 18+ stops of dynamic range. But I'm afraid that is at least a year or two away.

Can I suggest you give up on the "I know what you think". In my opinion it has got past it's use by date.

I think the Rat Pack between Nikon and RED will produce the master of everything, e.g. Z1 or Z9II.

Already ordered the R1, but if the R1s/x/whatever is 80MP, I would get one, as long as it allows the option of shooting photos at lower resolution, like 30MP.

Just sold about $10k worth of canon gear on FB marketplace and got pretty much what I paid for it. I buy my gear used so I typically don’t lose money. I switched to Nikon. Z8, 800mm 6.3, 14-24mm, 180-600mm, and their third party Viltrox 16mm.

Canon to me was just too many disappointing items. Great brand tho but as a wildlife photographer canon has inferior telephoto lens compared to Nikon.

Should Canon have called the R1 the "R3-II" and have the R5-II join it? Good speculation. I'm not an electronics engineer, so I can't say what's possible that Canon could combine into one camera in terms of specs, but 24 megapixels? That's the number that made my heart sink. I feel as though Sony A1 owners are laughing. Nikon Z8 owners are laughing.

What if canon made an "eos r mark ii" and call it the r2. 30.3mp, E6 battery with updated autofocus and 4k120. Add a second card slot and it's game over🤯
