Image Hover Text Overlay Effect with HTML & CSS - Web Design Tutorial

Hello Guys i have a question, i have multiple Images and i want them next to another, but they are all under eachother. I tried many things but cant make it work.

The only strange thing is that my link doesn't work now. I had linked the image, but since I put the overlay over it, the link doesn't work anymore. Is it possible to use the css-overlay even if the image is supposed to act as a link?

so I am using Google Sites where I can add embed html...since I cant upload seperate CSS etc I would need a full html that includes that CSS how can I incorporate the CSS into the HTML?
