I kinda like to see this as revenge because German empires lead to the destruction of the Russian empire by sending lennin back to Russia to start the revolution and now that ghost of those actions came back and bit them in the ass it serves you right you lost again

I share the Nazi’s befuddlement at American hawkishness. What were the Nazis doing that Americans fundamentally disagreed with? Other than attacking Britain

The Soviets had additional fresh divisions in the far east which they are able to transfer to the defense of Moscow in the winter of 1941.

The Germans advance to Moscow sputters in the harsh winter while the Soviets able to counter attack with the fresh divisions from Siberia.

In your professional opinion, was the 1st day of Barbarossa the bloodiest day in history? What were the casualties that 1st day?

Excellent overview. I would point people to David Stahel's Operation Typhoon for a detailed and readable account of the failures in the drive on Moscow. Lack of attention to logistics, General Mud, and General, plus fierce Soviet resistance all contributed.
Woody over at WW2TV also has an interview or two with Stahel.

Generals Mud and Winter defeated the Germans. Many German soldiers suffered frostbitten feet and toes because those leather hobnailed boots conducted the heat away from their foot. Russian soldiers wore oversize felt boots which the troops stuffed with straw and rags-keeping their feet warm. More Germans were disabled by frostbite than by Russian bullets.

German arrogance and poor logistics including bad winter clothing and too thick gun oil was worth ten Soviet divisions.

The Phillipino Army was not even close to being trained properly at the onset of conflict, this was widely know, and the US had not received the Artillery pieces yet and there was poor coordination of the forces as well as preparation. Complaints by US Military leaders in the area were loud and clear.

McArthur's men were poorly trained and not even close to being ready to take on the Japanese. Just another reason to think McArthur was overrated. So many of the great generals, like Rommel and Montgomery, were great trainers of men, but not McArthur. He didn't even know that his men were so poorly prepared.

The Russia we think we know from quality productions such as WWTwo, present a country that only really started industrialization pre-WW I. Strike one. The Czar was the deciding factor in the Russian Revolution, and then the real fight was on. Strike two! The Spanish Revolution was a vicious OJT lab for both sides of the political spectrum, but especially for its external backers, Nazi Germany and Bolshevik Russia. The 1939 Treaty between these two countries proved more beneficial for Russia, buying it more time to prepare and, unfortunately, making entire nations buffer states between it and Germany. A double. The most amazing piece of industrial know-how was the physical dismantling of hundreds of factories and then moving them east of the Ural Mtns. to be rebuilt safely out of the reach of the German Luftwaffe, at that time. Another double. The German military knew it was not mechanized sufficiently to take on a country as vast as Russia. Luckily for them, Hitler thought he knew better than his Generals. A homer! Indy has a great series on the war games preceding Operation Barbarossa and the hard facts (e.g., lengthy supply lines, infantry unable to keep pace even with the early tanks, the whole issue of significant differences in railroad gauges adding to the supply problem, thousands of non-standard vehicles the Nazis had taken from conquered countries and incorporated into their own Army) facing a country without vital oil resources necessary for tank and plane production and locomotion. Hubris and delusion drove the Hitlerites forward into a two-front war. No year was an “easy year” for Russia, but 1939-1943 were the years where the fate of world probably was decided. It is a shame that Eisenhower and Stalin’s nascent friendship and exchange of personal correspondence was stymied by people American and Russian with agendas that benefitted from a “Cold War.”

Hitler’s insane decision to switch his attention from defeating Britain to invading Russia saved the British from defeat in a matter of a few weeks. The Russians lost more men and women in that conflict than all the other nations losses combined. Read that again. If it had not been for the Russians, the whole of Europe and a large part of Africa would be speaking German today.
