Subnautica - A 5 Year Retrospective

How do you think Subnautica holds up today?

This beautiful game, oh how we all love it to death, we wish we could get the feeling we had when we first played/watched it...

I will tell you what could help with that: WEATHER... A small and simple mechanic like this was considered, but never fully implemented...

If it was put in, the feel of the game would be 60% refreshed...

When I went to 4546B, I was amazed of the beauty of the planet first step out of my life pod. I was surrounded by water and did not know what to do when I jumped in I was surrounded by beauty.

I got this game when it was one of the free games of the month on PlayStation. I've played the hell out of it! Several times, in fact.

my second favourite video game ever next to Monster Hunter World. For much the same reasons as Monster Hunter World! I love being immersed in the ecology, the wildlife, and the beautiful scenery.

So happened to be i had to take almost 2 weeks of nightshifts in a row, and i started planning ahead what to do during the nights where i didnt have one, but wouldnt have enough time to get back to day-rythm. so i remembered/stumbled upon this game and decided to play it through during the nights where nothing else is to be done.
2 of the best weeks of my life. time flew by, and at the end i felt like i just came back from an exotic holiday trip. amazing experience.

Subnautica is a buggy mess, yet it will always be in my top 3 faviourite games ever

My first experience with the game was on Xbox and it was a bit of a Bethesda style experience with bugs but id Bethesda experience was actually good and not fundamentally flawed to an un-amusing level.

The game certainly is a unique experience in itself although I'm pretty sure some things like the inventory can be a bit obtuse to some people.
I can't really speak about below zero as I never played it but it's basically subnautica 2 but watered down from what i heard.

I just hope that in the next installment of the series they managed to deliver on a subnautica level experience again

I loved watching jacksepticeyes play through of subnautica. But my only regret is not being able to do my first play through blind, but still a fantastic experience

If I had a genie my wish would be to go into subnautica blind as I already knew so much about the game before playing it myself

Brilliant video. This game is ENTHRALLING, especially that first playthrough. Man hook that feeling up and inject it straight into my veins

every once in a while a game comes out that blows you away this is one of them games play it blind and enjoy figuring it out.

The first playthrough of any game is always a lot better than the rest but honestly I still love to go around and explore the ocean

Most likely Subnautica will go down as one hit wonder. First game was just a master piece but it was accidental master piece and they couldn’t bring back the magic on the sequel. Second is the studio has gotten bitten by culture bug so instead of telling interesting stories they want to educate their player base with a message.
I’m pretty sure new studio will appear and give us next underwater experiences and i also had a blast playing ManEater and hoping for great sequel to that game.

You very well can hunt in this game, with the right skills you can remove your restraint called fear via that empowering feeling earned by piloting a Prawn. With the Stasis Rifle and a Prawn, even Leviathans are light work.

One of those games you can spent 10 hours a day on for weeks until beating it then never playing it again

i like how you say they made the game to stop you becomeing to overpowered for where you live meanwhile i beat the game without moving from mybase in the safe shallows also dont question how i managed to get a cyclops into the safe shallows next to my lifepod like not even 100 metres away from it

I have never understood why people say that this is a survival game, survival games are all about focusing on survival, food and water in this is abundant. The steam store page says nothing about survival either: "Subnautica is an underwater adventure game set on an alien ocean planet. A massive, open world full of wonder and peril awaits you!"

the worst part about playing subnautica is you can't experience it for the first time again

Im hopeful unknown worlds will give us a squel. Same planet, but in the void or in the future.

I highly recommend playing subnautica (not below zero) on hardcore mode. Youve only got one life and it really changed the experience for me.

Why not below zero? Because of a certain ice worm who you cant avoid and will randomly instant kill you.

why dont the devs inplement the steam workshop into subnautica?
it takes away nearly all the pain of the stupid third party launchers

Wish I could get into the base building and exploring like I need to so I can finish this game. I do great at resource gathering and combat and only one of those is helpful here haha. Wish I could I play it with a friend.

Honestly, The only part of this game that I dislike is the endgame, It's just kinda boring and grindy.

I will never forget when I saw the big gun shoot down the ship coming to rescue you, and the unnerving exploration of that alien base. Not knowing if a hostile alien would attack at any minute. On of my favorite gaming experiences.

Too many Spoilers in the review!!

Not only does it hold up well, the devs have actively been updating it since release even after they made Below Zero so it's even better today than it was when it came out.

It's one of those games I'd love to have wiped from my memory so I can play it fresh again because of how awesome it was.

The 'reward' for killing the Leviathans is being able to then travel without the fear of being crunched. >.<

Imagine if they made a game playing as the degasi crew
